Problem Identification
One very important department in hospitals is Urgent Care, which is highly used when dealing with critical and urgent situations, without the necessity of an appointment. The main advantage is that, in this center, there are more services available than in a normal clinic. Also, they are more reliable and convenient, as they offer treatment on time, with the possibility of extending work time hours (Gilson & Van den Hof, 2003).
This place comes with a substantial financial responsibility, considering the fact that expensive utensils have to be bought, and also, there have to be especially designed places for any kind of medical problem. One good example is “a sleep lab”, which is a comfortable room destined for individuals who suffer from sleeping disorders in order to help them get enough sleep. A fortune is spent on this place alone, as the design is similar to that of high rated hotels.
It is commonly known that people are prone to make mistakes. However, it is important to remove any factor that contributes to maximizing or repeating these errors. This is one of the reasons why hospital administration faces various difficulties and challenges. It is undeniably that doctors and nurses must understand perfectly the environment and tools they are working with (Gilson & Van den Hof, 2003).
In the context of a latent condition, an organization provides a favorable environment to an error to persist. It could be due to its poorly premeditated medical facilities, staff shortage, training gaps, or even confusing procedures. One cause of these conditions is a careless management. For instance, the physical environment should never be ignored; the place should be peaceful, healthy for both patients and staff, and noise free (Kaplan & Weiner, 2001).
From an ethical point of view, inadequate staffing generates unpleasant situations, like high rates of infections, small accidents like falling down due to slippery floors or inappropriate placement of handrails. Also, unprepared nurses may cause delays during surgeries because they do not know where the equipment is placed. This is also a downside for patients, because nurses have the responsibility of keeping under surveillance their progress.
Another financial responsibility, when designing urgent care centers, is to consider beforehand the purpose and size of each room. For example, as mentioned before, when referring to a sleeping lab, it should be both comfortable and it should be easily accessible by the medical staff, doctors, and nurses (Gilson & Van den Hof, 2005). In aIDition, a ward should be placed in such a way that nurses would have the possibility to observe them well.
Inside a medical organization, many efforts are made to solve the problem of repeated errors. It has been noticed that there is a connection between the substantial environment (the size of the rooms for instance), the patients, and the staff. Therefore, an important amount of money is spent on last hour technology in order to improve performance in a simple and consistent way.
Contrary to the popular belief, a highly paid staff is not necessarily a good choice. When recruiting nurses or doctors, one should keep in mind that this type of personnel need to be well educated in order to be capable of excellent results and also to help the others, who are less skilled. Moreover, they should be well trained and thoroughly tested before actually entering the medical system.
In conclusion, an Urgent Care Clinic requires a lot of resources and money, but it is a necessary center as it provides people with fast treatment, very good conditions, and a well trained staff. As an organization, it is supposed to be united and error free. Unfortunately, it also struggles with problems regarding some implications, such as ethical, financial, and managerial.
