How to use rhetoric to get what you want Camille A. Langston (Links to an external site.)
Rhetoric can be defined as persuasive speaking or writing. Rhetoric can used to motive, sway, or inform an audience, or arouse a response from them. The video selected above, How to use rhetoric to get what you want , describes the components that are universally used to persuade a crowd. The video begins by providing some background about how rhetoric was used by famous greek philosopher, such as Aristotle. He proposed three kinds of persuasive speech: judicial rhetoric, which is used to establish facts about the past; demonstrative rhetoric, which is used to bring people together; and deliberative rhetoric, which is utilized when talking about the future. Deliberative rhetoric is the most popular form of persuasive speech for people such as activists because it presents their speech as an urgent matter that the audience must get behind with.
In the selected text, The History of Public Address and an Academic Study , early elocutionists emphasized style, delivery, and tone of voice in order to make a lasting impression to the audience. However to these elocutionists, the content of the speech was not their primary concern; to them, delivery was paramount. In the video chosen above, the significance of the message was emphasized. For example, they referenced the famous I Have a Dream Speech from MLK describing how it was his message of equality that was able to truly reach such a massive audience. Furthermore, it was also MLK s effective use of deliberative rhetoric, which illustrated the bleak and racists society that will continue to reign unless they put a stop to it.
The last part of the video explains how Aristotle believed in three persuasive appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is how the speakers establishes credibility, either by stating what makes you qualified to talk about what you are talking about. Logos is the logic of the argument that the rhetoric proposes, which is often achieved through examples. Logos is considered an important component because this will provide the reasoning to the argument. Finally pathos, which appeals to emotion. Pathos can be observed through Tv commercials and their appeals to satisfy our needs for something. Combining all these aspects of speech can make a powerful and compelling argument that will have a significant impact on the desired audience.
