Modern Culture ruining Childhood
Raising children or working closely with them during this contemporary age is very
different to the way children were raised years ago before modern culture and technological
advances. Most parents and caregivers would agree with the fact that dramatic changes have
occurred during the past several years and a part of these changes is the modern culture.
According to historians, the modern culture began during the 19th century and its main objective
was to scientifically make the world a better place (Zahra & Alanazi, 2019). As a result of
modern culture, many children have had access to education. In many parts of the world,
children and young adults, have been able to attend schools and universities and acquire higher
levels of education. Despite the positive impacts, childhood has also been negatively impacted
by having access to video games, social media, and junk food resulting from modern culture. In
person social interaction has been greatly affected, its easier and in some places safer, to keep
kids entertained in front of a T.V or tablet than taking them to a park or letting them out to play
with their friends or ride a bike. Furthermore, modern culture has led to psychological and
behavioral issues resulting from excessive usage of technology. Even though there are many
positive impacts, modern culture has ruined many aspects of todays childhood.
Modern culture has ruined childhood through excessive use of technology and social
media. A significant link exists between poor academic performance and social media usage. A
research conducted by Christia et al., (2017), shows that contemporary children rely on social
media platforms for access to information as well as the web to find answers. This means that
there is a reduction in the ability of children to focus on learning as well as reading and retaining
information. Additionally, most students attempt to multitask by checking on notifications from

social media during their studies. This reduces their ability to concentrate in class and tasks at
hand due to distractions from the social media sites. According to Zahra and Alanazi (2019),
While no one in the world can argue about the advantages of the sophisticated technology,
attachment to these machines may lead to a disconnection from what society should value most,
kids. Apart from poor academic performance, it is evident from Zahra and Alanazis study that
modern culture has reduced the social connectedness of children in society.
Some aspects of modern culture such as video games, mobile phones, and social media
are likely to cause some physical health disorders such as fluctuating weight, insecurities and
depression. Peas (2019) states, Another adverse concern of parents are related to the belief that
excessive use of the devices is associated with health problems, such as vision damage,
behavioral, or even mental issues. Parents fail to understand why their children either lose or
gain weight without any obvious reasons. In many cases, the main reason behind this issue is
their constant indulgence in video gaming, chatting, and social media leading to addiction. Many
children tend to stay in their rooms for long periods of time playing video games or using their
mobile devices and they drift apart from their siblings and their families. As James et al. (2017)
states, The presence of mobile phones and other devices can inhibit intimacy when interacting
with others face-to-face. Some may even forget to eat or may eat excessively without realizing
it, leading to eating disorders and depression as a result.
Modern culture has affected the younger generations in many different ways, one of them
is having easy access to inappropriate content that can be found online. With modern technology
being readily accessible, children are likely to come across material that is inappropriate or
violent. Pornography has been a major problem brought on by modern technology and it affects
children and teenagers who are finding it difficult to concentrate on their studies because they

spend a lot of time on these sites (Zahra & Alanazi, 2019). Additionally, because modern culture
endorses and establishes behavioral norms of adolescents and their peers, most adolescents tend
to participate in high-risk behaviors if they believe that their peers are participating in that
particular behavior. A recent report on the relationship between high-risk sexual behaviors and
perception among the youth shows that young people underreport protective behaviors of their
peers and over report high sexual behaviors (James et al., 2017). The media has made its way
into the minds of the youth, who associate sexually suggestive photos with having sex with
strangers and without protection. This may expose them to sexually transmitted diseases, and
even unplanned pregnancies among teenagers who are not ready to deal with such issues and
responsibilities.
Despite many arguments on the effects of modern culture on childhood, many will argue
that there are tons of benefits to children growing up in the modern age. Modern culture has
brought about increased access to educational and career opportunities for children when they
grow up (Christia et al., 2017). Contemporary children have access to online classes, educational
content, and research through the internet. Furthermore, video games have substantially helped
in the cognitive development of children since they provide them with a greater opportunity to
think and use their imagination. Additionally, children are experiencing a wide range of
opportunities for them to connect with other children and experts in line with their abilities.
According to Christia et al. (2017), Cognitive abilities may arise through using the programs
included in the laptops, given that they are aimed at improving thinking processes. Modern
culture has helped them realize their potential and skills. Even though modern culture has led to
many positive changes in childrens development, it cant be ignored that these changes come
with many negatives that have affected the life of many children. For some it has been helpful

and educational but for so many it has been the cause of isolation, insecurities, depression,
anxiety, and social withdrawal.
Conclusion
In conclusion, modern culture has ruined childhood, especially through technological
advancements. Apart from being related to lower academic performances, modern culture has led
to physical health problems and increased access to inappropriate content. However, modern
culture has positively impacted childhood through increased access to education, and new
opportunities to connect. The fact that modern culture has been a part of the younger generation
especially having been born in an era of advancing technology, most of them feel that they
cannot go without using it. With the increasing negative impacts of some aspects of modern
culture in the lives of children, major strategies should be taken to enable safer use and reduce its
challenging effects.
