Homework 3: Industrial Hygiene Sampling and Analytical Methods – Presentation (10 pts)
Due: PPT prepared on May 13 submitted in Canvas before class, to be presented during zoom
session on this date.
Background: To prepare for learning about industrial hygiene, you will become familiar with the
different sampling and analytical techniques used in a consultative and regulatory agency. These are
methods provided by OR OSHA. In the past, we have visited the OR OSHA Occupational Health lab,
where you would have seen this equipment and meet with the lab manager and industrial hygienist who
could explain and demonstrate the use of these techniques. Oregon is one just a few states that has such
a lab so we are lucky to have the facility.
Instructions: You will be responsible for presenting information from a method, provided by OR OSHA,
that you drew from a “hat”. Use internet resources to learn more about the agent being sampled, how it
is sampled and how it is analyzed. You will prepare a 5-10-minute presentation for the class covering
the following items:
Description of:
The agent. (2 points)
Occupation or workplace setting potentially exposed to the agent/hazard. (2 points)
Sampling technique is used in the method. (3 points)
Analytical technique is used in the method. (3 points)
Hint: You should be able to show images of the occupational settings and what instruments are used for
sampling and analyzing which would help you describe it to your classmates. Make it a nice
presentation!

Respirable Particulate
Method 1003
Date Issued: April 24, 2001
Analytes: Respirable Particulate, including Welding fume, Nuisance dust, Oil mist (mineral), and Particulate Not Otherwise
Regulated (PNOR)
NOTE: This method is not recommended for wood dust.
Summary: Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filters are weighed and placed in cassettes. The samples are collected at 2.5 L/min using an
SKC aluminum cyclone. The filters are reweighed.
Sampling:
Sample Media: 5.0 µm low ash polyvinyl chloride filters (LA-PVC).
Use an SKC Aluminum cyclone.
Required Sampling Flow Rate:
2.5 L/min for SKC Aluminum cyclone
Sampling Time:
Maximum: 400 L
A Dorr-Oliver 10-mm nylon cyclone may be used but is not
preferable.
1.7 L/min for Dorr-Oliver cyclone
Minimum: 20 L
Sampling Procedure:
Sample at 2.5 L/min using an SKC Aluminum cyclone or 1.7 L/min for the Dorr-Oliver cyclone. At the specified flow rates, these
cyclones meet the OR-OSHA size selection criteria for crystalline silica. See Appendix A
Cassette Preparation:
Zero balance before each weighing. Handle filter using forceps. Pass filter over antistatic device and weigh to nearest microgram
(0.000001 g) using microbalance. Print filter weight and enter value into LIMS. Place filter on a support pad in three piece cassette
(use two piece cassette if sampling with a Dorr-Oliver cyclone) and compress cassette with vice. Cap ends of cassette. Place a
cellulose shrink band on cassette. Let cellulose shrink band dry before labeling cassette with date and filter type. Filters are good for
one year.
Sample Preparation:
Zero balance before each weighing. Disassemble cassette and using forceps, remove filter from cassette. Pass filter over antistatic
device and weigh to nearest microgram (0.000001 g) using microbalance. Print filter weight and enter value into LIMS.
Humidity: Criteria are 30 – 65 % RH.
If room humidity is outside of these criteria, do not weigh PVC filters.
Cassette Preparation Quality Control:
Follow same Quality Control procedures as when weighing samples.
Sample Weighing Quality Control:
• Weigh the 0.025 g or 0.020 g weight(s) on the microbalance before and after weighing filters. Record values in microbalance
weight book. Both weights should be within +/- 0.1% of expected weight.
• Reweigh at least one sample blank per analytical sample set and at least one in every twelve samples. Record both weights in
Microbalance Log Book. Both weights should be within +/- 0.030 mg of each other
• Weigh duplicate 5.0 µm PVC QC filters A and B and record weights in Microbalance Log Book. Acceptance Criteria is
calculated quarterly and recorded at top of log sheet.
