Brazil in the World Cup
Soccer flows through the veins of all Brazilians. Rich or poor, young or old everyone is
raised looking up to national heroes like Pelé and Ronaldinho. The Brazilian national team, also
known as the “Seleçáo”, have the most World Cups out of any team, with an outstanding number
of five. Their latest triumph took place in 2002. The last World Cup was a massive
embarrassment for a country so rich in soccer tradition. This is because Brazil hosted the
tournament yet went bankrupt in doing so. The citizens of Brazil believed that hosting the World
Cup would inspire the Brazilian team to claim a sixth victory. However, fate was not on their
side as their star player, Neymar, picked up an injury and the Seleçáo went on to lose to Germany
with a score of 8-1. This year seems to look and feel a bit different, according to Soccernomics,

The roster is full of lots of younger talent such as, goalkeeper Alisson and Real Madrid star
Casemiro alongside Neymar.
Brazil has competed in every single World Cup that has ever
taken place and it is the only country ever able to do so. After their
World Cup win in 1970, the team was awarded the Jules Rimet
Trophy, which was theirs permanently (https://en.wikipedia.org/

Trophy (shown on the right) was the original prize for winning the
World Cup. Thus a new trophy was created for the 1974 World Cup and that World Cup is what
is still awarded to the winner of the tournament to this day. With the team roster this year, Brazil
has a good chance at once again, being able to take home the Fifa World Cup Trophy.

The players on this 2018 World Cup team are not just representing their country and their
fans, they are also representing the history and future of soccer in Brazil. Soccer means
everything to the country. The sport was first brought to Brazil in 1884 by two British men. The
first people to play soccer were a part of the “Brazilian social elite” (https://sites.duke.edu/wcwp/
research-projects/politics-and-sport-in-latin-america/brazil/) but then quickly developed into a
sport for the lower classes. Being a sport in the lower class meant that anyone was able to play
therefore becoming known as “the people’s game.” (Guttman, 43). This saying “the game of the
people” really is what represents soccer culture in Brazil. Being a game of the people meant that
they had their own unique way of playing.
Brazil transformed the game into something different than it originally was. “The new
game was highly flamboyant, with the defensive posturing and tactical movement of English
football replaced by speed and flair.” (https://sites.duke.edu/wcwp/research-projects/politics-andsport-in-latin-america/brazil/) Brazil created a name for themselves, in the soccer world, for their
exciting way of playing. The link of the video below shows this “speed and flair” in some of the
best Brazilian moments of past World Cups, along with the amazing reactions of the fans, which
really show how soccer is a game of the people in Brazil.

The loss of the last World Cup for Brazil, is something that viewers should expect not to
hold the team back this year. The players on this team are playing with a vengeance for their
fans, their country, and the history and future of soccer in Brazil. This being said, it is safe to say
there will be a kind of determination to win from the players, to be able to redeem themselves.
David Luiz, though not on the team this year, was interviewed after the World Cup loss of 2014
and stated, “Sorry to everyone, to all Brazilians. I just wanted to make them smile.” (Pictured

a deeper meaning being that, soccer is a game of the people in Brazil.
The Brazilian National Team is an image of Brazil that represents Brazilian culture and
history. Soccer was what once helped the country
“succeed beyond political turmoil” (https://

experienced during the 60’s with their President
Joao Goulart. This political turmoil eventually
turned into an economic crisis, so the government
turned to the 1962 Brazilian National Team (shown above) to help generate revenue for the
country. This Brazilian National Team was the hope the country needed, they won the World
Cup and in turn represented how the country would be able to get through this rough economic
and political time.
These economic problems were not over yet. In the 70’s many government issues
affected the citizens of Brazil. There was a lot of repression enforced by the then government
leader General Emilio Garrastazu Medici and much of the population did not agree with his way
of governing. “Men and women accused of being revolutionary, often in the universities or other
intellectual settings, were routinely rounded up and imprisoned with no trial.” (https://

happening, the Brazilian National Team was in the 1970 World Cup, this team is said to be the
best team Brazil has ever had. Levine and King describe the way the Brazilians played as if they
were “aware of the inner turmoil of each Brazilian at that time” (https://sites.duke.edu/wcwp/
research-projects/politics-and-sport-in-latin-america/brazil/) and played to win for the citizens
who were being repressed by this government. The 1970’s World Cup Champion Team was
more than just a team, it was a symbol of hope for Brazil.
Brazil has gone through many difficulties, economically and politically, and soccer has
always been there as a sign of hope that they could over come any difficulty. This 2018 World
Cup is important for not only the Brazilian National Team but also Brazil as a country. After
their difficult 2014 World Cup Finals loss, Brazil is due for a win. With Brazil currently being in
an economic recession, winning this World Cup could be the kind of hope Brazilians are in need
of. After all, for Brazilians, soccer is “the greatest joy of the people.” (Guttmann, 63)
