What is team building? For human service workers, “team building” is the ability to take individual from one arena and guide and support them into the next. Team building is the process of motivating individuals to identify their strengths and weaknesses; strengthening their weaknesses to work together with others in the wider society. In motivating individuals and assisting them in identifying their strengths and weaknesses, a human service provider must be aware of all affecting factors and all stimuluses. Everyone develops under the process of nature and nurture therefore, everyone is affected by their environment, culture, socio-economic background, etc. (extrinsic factor) and by their innate personality traits, and both biological and chemical make-up (intrinsic factor).

Team building is just one aspect, once a human service worker work towards understands each individual client and can motivate them into accessing their own skills and abilities, strengths and weaknesses, it is the human service worker’s role to now consistently acquire and utilize effective methods in establishing and accomplishing team goals. This is the heart of team management and team leading. For example, running a Substance Abuse group requires the human service provide to understand everyone, both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, as well as being able to lead the group, keep the group in control and making the group a successful group where everyone understand their roles in the group and want to be a part of the group.
