American University of Sharjah Banking Performance in Italy Article Review Write a two page literature review on performance of Banks in Italy. You are to find four published papers on the topic and summarize them each in a paragraph. Please include a reference page (not included in two page summary). A sample of what I consider the bare minimum is attached According to Riyas Kalathinkal in the article A Comparative Study of Performance of Local Banks in
Sultanate of Oman (2017), The current Omani banking system consists of 18 banks; 7 are locally
incorporated, of which Bank Sohar is one, 2 are specialized banks, and the remaining 9 are branches of
foreign banks. He states that the banking industry in Oman has witnessed substantial growth over the
past few years. Development has been attributed to steady oil price increases, the rapid growth of the
private sector, and the frequent upcoming industrial and infrastructure projects, allowing the banks to
thrive. This study emphasizes how the banking sectors performance is directly impacted by
macroeconomic variables such as interest rates, inflation, and other factors such as economic growth
and ownership (Kalathinkal, 2017; Athanasoglou et al., 2006). Therefore, it is important to fully
understand how well integrated the banking sector is into the Omani economy and the influences the
two have on each other. In another book by Al-Hassan et al., in the year 2008, just two years prior to the
period being investigated, the banking sector stood at 66% of the total GDP of Oman (2010). This is a
huge portion of the economy. Since the banking sector acts as the backbone of the economy through its
vital role of intermediation, allowing for the efficient allocation of resources, poor performance may
result in financial disaster nationwide. Much of the financial sector is domestically owned and there is a
limit of foreign ownership of 35% in Oman, such that only 12% of total assets belong to foreign banks
(Al-Hassan et al., 2010). Of the total banking sectors assets, 55% falls under the control of just 2 banks;
National Bank of Oman and Bank Muscat (Al-Hassan et al., 2010). However, some scholars contend that
the development of the banking industry hinges on the intensity of competition within banks. Foreign
banks have increased competition, yet local banks remain dominant due to limitations and how wellestablished they have become in Oman. 4 The Central Bank of Oman however continues to encourage
local banks to expand and open more branches around the country to promote competition (Tarawneh,
2006).
