Response and Analysis Essay Submission
Select one source from the TCC library databases and complete a response/analysis essay according to the guidelines
included in the attached files for this lesson. Your essay must be composed with MLA formatting and should be at least two
pages in length. Remember, the source you analyze must come from the TCC library only.
Response and Analysis Essay
This essay will be five paragraphs in length. It should be about 2 pages (650 words).
Paragraph 1: Introduction
Your first paragraph will describe the text: its author, its title, its topics, its images, its length or
form, any context your reader might need (where it came from, when it was created, etc).
Your thesis will be the end of your first paragraph.
Paragraph 2: Response
Your second paragraph will be your response. In this paragraph, you are welcome to use first
person, but remember to keep an academic tone. While expressing your response, you may include
opinion, but it should be appropriate and professional. For example, saying This part kind of
sucks, is not acceptable, but saying This section did not appeal to me because
is acceptable.
Paragraphs 3 4: Analysis
Your third and fourth paragraphs will be your analysis. Choose two elements to analyze one per
paragraph. Follow the guidelines in this lesson for analyzing those elements and how they
contribute to the texts meaning, effectiveness, or impact.
This should be the longest section of your essay, and should include examples from the text.
Paragraph 5: Conclusion
Your final paragraph will be brief and function as a summarizing conclusion.
Things to Remember:
You need an original title
You may only use first person in the response paragraph
Your essay, though it has different sections, should be unified in support of your thesis statement.
Your analysis section should use examples from the text as support. For example, if you are arguing
that the texts language made it especially unclear, then provide quotes from the text that illustrate
the complex language.
Your response section may also include examples from the text as support.
Your essay should not include information, ideas, examples, quotes, summary, or references from any
additional sources. Use only the text and your interpretation of it.
Opinions do not belong in the analysis section of the essay.
