Imagine the parents take the boys to the zoo. The boys get lost and find themselves on their own, separated from their parents. What happens?

In 2-3 paragraphs, write a short chapter in the style of Justin Torres that demonstrates the relationship between the brothers as set up by book thus far.

Since the essay prompt of this unit asks you to discuss how the protagonist is impacted/shaped by his siblings, what is one adjective to describe the protagonist so far? Find three examples from the text that support this, and analyze how the siblings might play a role in this (you have to do this anyway for the essay, so this is just a head start).

Respond to a classmate.

The main character is impressionable. He is always following his brothers, and seems to conform to the majority of what they do, yet is still seen as the “little one” by his mother and seems to be more innocent than his brothers. For example, he nearly always joins in to what his brothers are doing—he joins in as his brothers hit their parents, “kicking for Paps but hitting Ma,” (70) seeing that his brothers are attacking them and joining in and echoing their sentiments as well. He also describes everything with we, especially in We Wanted More, as he says “we wanted more…we were six snatching hands, six stomping feet; we were brothers, boys…” going along with all that his brothers do and conforming himself to their animalistic actions. Despite this, he still maintains some of his innocence, showing he is still learning from his parents in some ways, being the “little boy” that his mother wants to keep and “[yelling] for [his brothers] to stop” over and over as they fight in Old Locusts.

What is the relationship of the brothers with each other? Please aim to answer beyond “they are close, because they spend a lot of time together.” How do they speak to one another? Is there a leader?
