Collaboration
Successful collaborative writing is a major objective of the project and should be
emphasized in class discussions. Students should be asked to consider their work
habits and the implications of those habits when working collaboratively.
Encourage students to leverage their strengths in the workflow and in assigning
duties–i.e., math skills, attention to detail, writing skills, visual design skills,
strong organizational skills. And also encourage students to build into their
workflow ways to negotiate work habits like procrastination or perfectionism to
ensure that all team members complete work on time and up to the teams’
specifications. The initial memo deliverable includes a Team Charter that should
be developed through exercises that ask students to be both critically reflexive and
honest with the team about their work habits, and to think through how the team
will work together. Collaborative skills are further developed through regular
Team Progress Reports. The efficacy of the team’s collaborative efforts is reflected
in the Individual Team Evaluations submitted at the end of the semester.

Background of Problem:
Stress is defined as “a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or
very demanding circumstances” (Dictionary.com). It is a common way of life for many people
who are either in school, college, the workforce, etc. Having said this, it is important to note that
stress is a very significant issue affecting a lot of students on the USF campus-whether it be
academic related (grades, homework, exams, etc.), relationship problems, work related problems,
etc. The bottom line is, stress is very common in USF students and is greatly impacting their
mental health in negative ways.
Problem Description:
According to thebestschools.org, “Traditional college age students are uniquely vulnerable to
stress and anxiety. According to Courtney Knowles, executive director of The JED Foundation, a
charitable organization that aims to reduce suicide and improve mental health for college
students, the average age of onset for an array of mental health conditions is in the range of 18 to
24. In fact, says the National Institute of Mental Health, 75% of individuals with anxiety
disorders will begin to experience symptoms before reaching the age of 22” (Tomar 1). Based on
this, it is clear that college age students are the primary target for stress and anxiety. At USF
locally, these facts are pretty accurate, as there are hundreds and hundreds of students in this age
range that deal with stress each day. In addition, it is important to address that stress leads to a lot
of severe health consequences – more than what many people actually think. Ashford.edu states
that some of the physical effects of stress include Low energy levels, Headaches, Stomachaches
and nausea, Insomnia, Chest pains, Frequent colds or other illnesses, and Shaking or sweating
hands (Ashford.com). The USF website itself further expands on this by describing common
behavioral signs of stress including Excess smoking, Bossiness, Eating too little or too much,
Critical attitude of others, Short-tempered, Procrastination, Sleeping too much or too little,
Driving too fast, Grinding of teeth, Overuse of alcohol, Inability to finish tasks, Nail biting, and
being Fidgety(Usf.edu). The USF website is used as a source to further support the idea that USF
students are heavily impacted by stress, and in negative ways. Having said all of this, it is clear
that stress should not be taken, as it leads to all these dangerous health consequences.
Causes of Problem:
Thebestschools.org writes “You’re adjusting to an unfamiliar environment. Your classes,
assignments, and exams are much harder than anything you experienced in high school. You feel
a palpable pressure to succeed, both as a consequence of internal and external forces” (Tomar 1).
This quote clearly gives the reader the feeling that college is not easy, and there is much
competition and pressures. Based on this, it is completely understandable why college students
are so stressed all the time. The article writes “Briefly speaking, some combination of work,
child-rearing, bills, home maintenance, taxes, personal commitments, social obligations, gym
membership, heath concerns, and aging parents may keep you in constant motion during the day,
and restless at night. Add grades, credits, exams, and tuition costs to the mix and it’s easy to see
why this exciting and awesome time in your life a crucible of anxiety can also be” (Tomar 1) to
further support this idea. Ultimately though, it is easy to see that stress in college students has a
variety of causes, but with the right help and counseling, it is easy to fix- provided that the
students use the help that is provided.
Impacted Populations:
Based on a survey I took during the week before spring break regarding stress levels, its causes,
and its health effects, 10 USF students were asked various questions as follows:
1) How much stress do you as an individual take? (On a scale of 1 – 5, 1 being the least
stressed and 5 being the most stressed.)
2) Do you think the stress you take is affecting your daily life?
3) What is your age?

The pie chart presented in Figure 1 was a synopsis of my findings based on asking the questions
to the various people. The answers varied obviously, but the general consensus showed that
most of the people I surveyed did take lots of stress as there was a quite a bit of 4s and 5s, and
most of the students were between 19 and 23 years old. Ultimately, the people who were in
the 4-5 range clearly need medical assistance.
The ultimate takeaway from all of this though is that stress is very common in the USF campus
and it is very normal to experience stress in difficult situations. However, it is important to
recognize its severe health consequences, and more importantly that help is there, whether it is
in the form of counseling, listening to music, exercise/yoga. No matter what type of coping
method you choose, it is important that an individual chooses at least one coping strategy in
order to save themselves from stress negatively impacting their lives. It is the student’s
responsibility to try to remove as much stress as possible from their lives no matter how
difficult the situation becomes.

Background of the problem
Stress in general is one of the most dangerous feelings, stress could cause many bad effects to

body to certain challenges or demands. Stress at USF is most of the time bad for the students, but
it could be good stress sometimes, Students could feel excited about a good grade or a good
situation at USF. This Type of stress among the students of USF, help keep us alive and adds up
a good action to our routines.
Description of the problem
Due to many problems that caused by stress between students, we will try to describe the
problems more specifically. Stress among students at USF, is one of the most disturbing and
worrying problems that students could get. As we know, stress could be emotional, which means
that being under stress makes students feel anxiety, worry and fear. Also, stress among students
at USF could be physical. Which means that students who is under pressure and under stress
could be going through many physical problems. For instant, students could go get a headache,
they could be running low on energy, chest pains and many more other problems caused by
stress among collage students. Students stress could be external (from the environment), or it
could be internal (illness). The feelings that stress generates is when students feel uncomfortable.
The impact of stress
Students are the main target of stress at collages, not professors, not staff and not faculties.
During a research that was made by NYU, 55% of students at universities feel the academic
stress, 6 in 10 college students report having felt so stress that they couldn’t do their collage
work. Even though students considered the main target for stress at universities, but the parents
and the family of the students could be dragged to it. Having the son or the daughter go through
stress at school, could get the parents feeling the same way their kids feeling and not knowing
how to solve the problem and get rid of it. In regards of a stress stats that was done by affordable
school’s website, 46.3% the percentage of college students who feel completely overwhelmed by
their academic responsibilities. 11% the percentage of students who actually discuss their stress
with a campus counselor. The number of college students that feel stressed and get impacted by

The causes of stress can vary from minor effects to major effects. The main causes of stress
among students are examination. Examinations considered one of the most common causes
nowadays between college students. Also, deadlines which puts the students under pressure to
finish the assignments and assignments for most of the classes might all be at the same day.
According to the University of Saint Andrews, “different things cause stress in different people”,
some of the things students commonly cite as causes of stress includes, the return to study. When
students have a long vacation between semesters, and they get used to being away from pressure
and study then suddenly come back to colleges and universities, that could lead to stress. Also,
the poor time management, some people get stress from the noise, also leaving the assignments
to the last minute and last but not least it could be the parents or problems at home. As we see in

During recent years, there has been an aggravating psychological problem among college
students. More specifically, a growing number of USF students have been reporting increased
levels of stress. It is, undoubtedly, a serious problem that can hamper their physical health,

the students at USF is often related to the rapid shifts in lifestyle, increased tasks, and their new

Description of the Problem
As it was previously mentioned, high levels of stress can impact the physical, emotional, and

number of USF students affected by stress has been increasing every year, which is a direct
evidence of the situation’s gravity. Furthermore, such a stable growth of the number of troubled
students suggests that the issue might stem from certain internal processes at USF, which merits

The research has shown that the individual levels of stress are unprecedentedly high as well. A
study of 67,000 college students in more than 100 colleges revealed that those in racial, ethnic
and sexual or gender minorities are particularly susceptible, as they generally experience more
stressful events, are susceptible to mental illnesses, and the risk of suicidal thoughts was also
reported among all students that participated in the said experiment. According to this study, 3
out of 4 students confirmed having had at least one stressful life event in 2017. Also, the study
resulted in the discovery of the fact that over 20% of the students surveyed experienced six or
more stressful life situations in 2017. The experiment also found that exposure to stress among
college students was strongly related to mental health diagnoses, self-harm, and suicidal
thoughts.
