Dear All,
This is a reminder that you should start doing your data project this weekend
in case you have any questions to ask me next week.
Guideline
Step 1: Go to
https://data.worldbank.org/indicator and select the data
based on your interesting research question.
Step 2: Download them by looking at excel on the right side.
Step 3: Organize the data from wide to long by using filter, copy and paste
special (transpose) See examples shown in class on blackboard.
Step 4: Follow the questions Q1-Q8
Step 5: Come to my office if you cannot do it and have questions!
Final Project
kittiyaratch.thanakornmonkkonchai@cgu.edu and kthanakornmonkkoncha@laverne.edu, including
the raw data and output results.
Please submit one assignment per group with names of group members on the front page. There will
be a component of graphs, data, and writing by using Microsoft Word. Make sure your graphs are good
quality and easy to understand. Data should be shown in tables. Your explanation should be in
complete paragraph form and flow logically underneath the results. You can use your own data set and
set up your own research questions by following questions below. You can choose one of these two
examples.
You must answers all questions below.
1. Research the relationship between an independent variable (X) and a dependent variable (Y), what
type of relationship do you expect (Positive, negative, none)? Explain. (1 paragraph)
2. Make a scatter plot that shows the relationship between an independent variable (X) and a
dependent variable (Y).
3. Descriptive Statistics: State the maximum, minimum, average, standard deviation and skewness for
each variable. (Comment on any interesting findings)
4. Select both one and two data sets and decide which hypothesis testing discussed in class should be
used and matched with you data set. Construct a 99% confidence interval for a mean difference and
Test at a 1% significance level. Use either the P-value or the critical-value approaches to make this test
and interpret your results
5. Correlation Analysis: Calculate the correlation coefficient (r). Does your value for r indicate a positive
or negative relationship between the two variables Comment on the strength of the relationship
between the two variables? (1 paragraph)
6. Regression analysis. Using Excel calculate the regression equation. Interpret and comment on the
slope of the equation and the intercept. (1 paragraph)
7. Conduct a test of hypothesis to determine whether the slope of the regression line is greater than
zero. Use the .05 significance level. Interpret your findings in a brief report. (1 paragraph)
8. Coefficient of determination. What percentage of the variation in y is accounted for by x? Is this a
strong regression? (1 paragraph)
Examples I: Research Question: Do poor countries save more or less than rich countries?
1. Research the relationship between savings rates and real GDP per capita, what type of relationship do
you expect (Positive, negative, none)? Explain. (1 paragraph)
2. Make a scatter plot that shows the relationship between savings rates and real GDP per capita in
2009, putting GDP per capita on the horizontal axis and savings rates on the vertical axis.
3. Descriptive Statistics: State the maximum, minimum, average, standard deviation and skewness for
each variable. (Comment on any interesting findings)
4. Select both one and two data sets and decide which hypothesis testing discussed in class should be

Example II. Physical Capital and GDP Growth: Do rich countries have more physical capital?
1. Research the relationship between physical capital and real GDP per capita, what type of relationship
do you expect (Positive, negative, none)? Explain. (1 paragraph)
2. Make a scatter plot that shows the relationship between physical capital and real GDP per capita in
2009, putting GDP per capita on the horizontal axis and physical capital on the vertical axis.
