This is an Internet-based assignment comprised of two sections: Section A and Section B.
Section A is worth 35% and Section B is worth 65%. You must print out originals of the
products derived from the step-by-step procedure in Section A. Any student who fails to
submit originals will automatically earn a zero for Section A. If there is any portion of this
assignment that you do not understand, you must discuss them with your instructor. The
assignment contributes 10% to your final grade in this course.
Print these step-by-step instructions and refer to them when doing this Internet exercise.
Section A. (This section is worth 35%)
1. Access the Internet and type in www.fda.gov in the address bar. (This takes you to the
official web site for the Food and Drug Administration-FDA)
2. Select ‘Drugs’ from the top of the menu that shows on the screen by left-doubling
clicking on it.
3. Look for ‘Spotlight’ on the top right hand corner of the page.
4. Under ‘Spotlight’, select and click on ‘Search Drugs@FDA’. (This takes you to the page
with ‘Drugs@FDA’ written boldly at the top).
5. Look for ‘Drug Approval Reports by Month’ on this page and click on it.
6. On the page that opens, you will see ‘Drug Approval Reports’ and the following
subheadings:
1. Select a Report
2. Select a month and year
7. Under ‘1. Select a Report’, you will see small circles with words following them. The
first circle is highlighted (it has a dot inscribed inside it).
8. Click on the second circle to highlight it. You will see a dot inscribed inside the circle.
(The circle has the following words written in front of it: ‘Original New Drug Approvals
(NDAs & BLAs) by Month’.
9. Look further down for ‘2. Select a month and a year’.
10. You will see a box with ‘Month’ followed by a rectangle with a v-shaped arrow inside
with ‘April’ and ‘Year’ with ‘2019’ written inside.
11. Click on the v-arrow after month and change the month to January by selecting January
from the drop down menu.
12. Change the year to 2018. Submit by clicking on the Search button.
13. Print the report that you see on the screen. Remember, only originals will be accepted.
Any student who fails to submit the original reports will earn a zero for this
section).
14. The first page of the report is divided into six columns. Look for the fourth column
which has the words ‘Submission Classification’ written in it. Look in this column and
identify all the drugs that have the number ‘1’ written against them in this column. Highlight
them on your report.
15. Now go back to the top of the report where you will again find ‘Month, _____
Year____ Submit’
16. Change the month to February and submit again.
17. Print only the FIRST page of the report that is generated.
18. Again, identify and highlight all drugs on this page that have the number ’1’written
against them in the third column.
19. Repeat these steps for the remainder of the months through December
20. You have finished Section A of this assignment
Section B (This section is worth 65%)
1. Google the term ‘new molecular entity’. In your own words, summarize your
understanding of this term
2. Select any ten (10) of the drugs that you highlighted in Section A above.
3. Visit www.drugs.com
4. Highlight ‘Health Professionals’ at the top of the page and select ‘A-Z Drug Facts (Facts
& Comparison) for the Professionals’ from the drop-down menu
5. Look for ‘Search A-Z Drug Facts for the Professional’
6. Below this line is a rectangle with the “Search’ written by it on the top.
7. Type the names of each of the 10 drugs that you have identified, one drug at a time, and
submit.
8. Use the report generated to gather the following information for each of the 10 drugs you
have identified;
a. Generic and trade names
b. Classification
c. Indications and usage
d. Nursing implications during administration
e. Two side effects and how they can be managed
f. Two patient teaching pieces of information
9. Compile this information and submit together with the reports you printed out
10. Remember to create a cover page.
