Social Relationships and its Benefits Journal Paper Critical Thinking Application Journal Instructions:Choose two concepts from the chapter of book and summarize each concept thoroughly, then apply these concept to a real world situation. Make sure it is in an essay format. An easier way to write this journal would be to start with: Introduction- introduce your two concepts and how you are going to apply them to a real world situation. Concept 1- Summarize thoroughly and cite the book. Apply concept 1 through critical thinking skills Concept 2- Summarize thoroughly and cite the book Apply concept 2 through critical thinking skills Conclusion- Close with telling us what concepts you chose. Each concept should be one or two sentences. Each concept application should be at least one sentence and how you applied them. Make sure to cite your work in MLA or APA format. Use 12 point font. Double Space your paper. Each bullet point in this document should be different paragraphs. There is no page requirement as long as you do all of the above parts of the journal. One way to cite the book in APA would be Floyd (2017) states that plagiarism “which means using information from another source without giving proper credit to that source.” Intellectual theft in several different ways including global theft, patchwork theft, and incremental theft (Floyd, 2017). You do not have to use APA for these journals. MLA is fine with me. Always remember to cite anytime you use an idea that is not widely known. Photo by Laura Cavanaugh/FilmMagic

Social Relationships Bring Material Rewards A second way social rela-
tionships benefit us is by helping to meet our material needs, such as our needs for
money, food, shelter, and transportation. People tend to share those types of resources
with others to whom they feel close. When
you
need help
moving, or a place to stay for the weekend, or a few extra
dollars to tide you over until payday, you’re more likely to
have those material needs met if you have strong social
relationships to draw on than if you don’t. You are also
more likely to offer those material rewards to your close
friends than to strangers or people you don’t know well.
Researchers use the term social capital to refer to the
resources we have as a result of our social relationships. 16
Social Relationships Bring Health Rewards
Positive social relationships also promote good health. A
study by psychologist Sheldon Cohen and his colleagues
found, for instance, that the more social relationships
people had, the better able they were to fight off the
common cold.17 Another study reported that people
with a strong social network were twice as likely as oth-
ers to survive a heart attack.18 In fact, after reviewing
more than 60 published studies on the topic, sociolo-
gist James House and his colleagues determined that
the lack of strong, positive social relationships is as big

CHAPTER 7 Communicating in Social and Professional Relationships
those relationship qualities decreased, meaning that online and
became more similar. A separate study confirmed that ties to online friendships are
weaker, at first, than ties to offline friends, but the strength of the relationship depended
on certain factors. For example, women reported weaker ties to their online friends
than did men, and frequent Internet users reported stronger ties than did occasional
users. Most important, those who shared personal information with their online friends
reported stronger ties than did those who shared only impersonal information.13
Just as the Internet provides multiple opportunities for forming positive social rela-
tionships, it unfortunately also allows people to violate the privacy of others. As “The
Dark Side of Communication” explains, such behavior can have devastating effects on
its victims.
Whether formed online or in person, many social relationships fulfill our needs
for interaction and emotional closeness and can help us feel connected to others in
meaningful and significant ways. The natural “need to belong” is not the only reason
social relationships matter to human beings, but Baumeister’s need to belong theory
suggests it’s one of the biggest.
SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS BRING REWARDS
Besides fulfilling our need to belong, social relationships matter because they bring us
rewards. We’ll now look at three types of rewards-emotional, material, and health-
and find they are often intertwined in our social relationships.
Social Relationships Bring Emotional Rewards Friends provide at least
two types of emotional rewards. One is emotional support, or encouragement during
times of emotional turmoil. Whether you’re going through a serious crisis or just
having a bad day, friends can provide comfort and empathy to help you make it
through.14 When Jennifer Thompson and Ronald Cotton worked through their trau-
matic history, they supported and listened to each other. Although their struggles
were challenging, their strong friendship helped them cope.
The second emotional reward of having friends is happiness. We enjoy interact-
ing with friends because it’s fun and relaxing and because our friends entertain us.
One of Erin’s favorite ways to spend a Friday night, for example, is to invite her good
friends over to cook dinner, watch movies on Netflix, and talk about what’s going
on in their lives. Hanging out with her close friends always makes Erin feel good.
Indeed, many of our happiest times are spent with our close friends around us.
