Assignment #9: Complex Inquiry Essay #3
We are embarking on a project that offers you a chance to develop an inquiry in your own area of interest. We’ve
looked at how Sacks and Wideman employ multiple perspectives, examine context, overturn assumptions, ask difficult
questions, and provide clear and meaningful explanations that address their central question.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Now it’s time to think about how to develop an inquiry of your own in a way that is just
as meaningful and compelling as what you’ve been reading. Write a 4-page essay about the following:
Think of someone you know personally who puzzles or intrigues you that you would like to understand in a more
complex way than you do right now.
Or think of something difficult or confusing or amazing that has happened to you that you want to investigate
thoroughly.
Unlike Sacks or Wideman, you do not have to choose a sad or painful subject; you might offer a portrait or analysis
of cause that looks at a remarkable person or event.
Come
up
with a central question that will frame your inquiry. The information you gather because of your inquiry
will be your essay.
ESSAY #3 PLANNING LETTER: For next class, please begin this process by writing a 1-page planning letter in
which you address these matters:
What is the question that will frame your inquiry?
Why are you interested in pursuing this question? What do you want to find out more about?
What are some of the methods you think you can use to research your question?

INTRODUCTION
Throughout this semester, I have read multiple passages that authors wrote in context to their own analysis of problems they have faced or
encountered in their lifetime. “Our Time” is written by John Edgar Wideman in his attempt to unravel the possible causes that are responsible
for Robby’s, the brother, decline in life and imprisonment. Meanwhile, the article “To See and Not See” was written by Oliver Sacks in his
effort of understanding the effects experienced by a blind man who recently recovered his vision. The questions confronted by the authors in
I
the two articles have made me realize the infinite questions left unanswered since the period of my birth. How did I end up being the person
am today? Where was my name derived from? Or
what does
my mom act so strict around me? Another thing that I noticed through those
assignments is the complexity of resolving a single problem and the various methods
both authors have acquired that has led to the discovery
of their causes. Despite the numerous inquiry kept in the back of my head, I was determined to dig deeper and investigate the reasons behind
my mom’s anger towards me.
As a child raised by a strict mom and an incredibly loving father, I would tend to be on my father’s side. During my childhood, the thought of
being with my dad twenty-four-seven is simply impossible due to his late-night meetings and busy schedule. So here I am, stuck in a position I
never chose to be in. I remembered all the arguments my mother and I fought over continuously every day and how I would always have ended
up being: bursting my eyes out. I know how my youth sounded depressing. Believe me, at times it was. The fear brought up by my mother
made me feel conscious of discussing something with her.
BODY
Growing up, I was a quiet, timid and unsociable child who blamed all her attitude and actions to her mom. Back then, I only had one best
friend who I cherish the most up till now. Since we are kids I have seen you crying because of your mother. Always complaining because she
was too strict, you never had the freedom to go anywhere etc. I can remember that some days, you were coming to class so sad and
frowning. When I reminisce about my youthful days, most of my memories were filled with the miserable times I’ve had because of her
scolding and life-long lectures about manners. Yes, we do celebrate all the joyful birthday parties and the jubilant Christmas celebrations, but
these memories quickly brush off my shoulders while the sorrow of all the other days was kept inside. Although this may sound awfully
dramatic, I remembered all the times my mom criticized me seem like putting a scar on my heart. I thought “Why does she never appreciate the
person I am? Could she only pinpoint my bad habits? What is her purpose in doing this?” Fortunately, I was able to survive my childhood with
the belief that maybe, this is the way she shows her love and care.
I sometimes see you and mom arguing over little things just a little too often. I feel that at some point it is unnecessary and would ruin your
mood. As a father, there are also sometimes when I scolded you, but it is usually more about larger important matters. But I really want to
discipline and do my best to teach whatever is right for you.
Something I observed growing up was that my mom would always put my little brother’s blame on my shoulders and she treated each of us
differently. Contrary to the belief that parents should be softer to their daughter; my mom was more lenient with my little brother. My
speculations revolve around the period my younger brother was born into. He was introduced a year later than me, making him “baby” of the
family. Babies would always be a parent’s priority under any circumstances. To my surprise, I am not the only person who felt this way. In
fact, my younger brother would occasionally question me “Why are you the one who constantly gets the blame? Oh, how I pity you.” From
then onwards, I immediately perceived the inequality brought up by my mother to an extent that even my brother felt the same way as I did.
During elementary school, from getting out of bed to eating meals, you were always the one who was blamed for. I feel like this is very true
especially when getting Christmas gifts, if I was to ask for something to mom, perhaps a very expensive toy, like a drone, I am very sure that
she would definitely buy me that. But remember when there was this one time you just wanted a something small and for no reason, mom
would just not let you get it. I
really grew my sense of pity for you, and dared myself to ask mom about it. She answered with a very simple answer: because your sister could
not have something she couldn’t keep her stuff for just a week before losing it. However, I realized as we grew older, the inequality in terms of
how we got treated shrank and this made me really happy for you.
“Be a good role model for your younger brother.” This is what my mom repeatedly reminded me to be.
My grandmother, someone who would endlessly manifest her signs of love, assured me that I have grown up to be someone that appreciates
and respectful of other people’s opinions. She is really fond of me, my grandmother. Although she may not be the best at conveying
compliments, she is the only family member who praises me as a child. On the other hand, my mother’s opinion exactly contrasts what my
grandmother said about me. Where should I start? As a working mom, I must admit taking care of you was really hard. Every night, you would
cry and wake me up. You were a difficult baby. I remembered how hard it was just to feed you. It took you 3 hours just to finish a meal. You are
messy, very messy. You like throwing your things everywhere and never clean it back. When you were in elementary school, you never did her
homework so I scolded and waited for you to finish your homework, I’m sorry I could not help you. All I wanted for you was so that you can
grow up to be a good girl, a better one because you are the only daughter I have. I tried and will keep trying my best to make you perfect.
CONCLUSION
Despite all the answers derived from a variety of sources and perspective, I figured out that the reasons behind my mother’s strict attitude are
undefinable. It became apparent to me that my mom did not act a certain way only due to one main, specific reason but instead to many other
causes that led up to her actions. Fortunately, both of us changed. I became, in my mom’s opinion, a more obedient and respectful child while
my mom tends to be more laid-back. Not so much for anger management issues. In the end, I could not conclude who to blame: myself or my
mother. Perhaps the fault lies in both of our hands; the difficulty of managing her anger issues and my irresponsible behavior that could
possibly be the result of my mom’s emotions. Or maybe, there are several other reasons that I have not yet to discover. Yes, I became more
acquainted with the explanations involving my inquiry. However, the disappointment of not being able to acquire a simple answer made
me accept the fact that trying to decipher the questions brought by life is both complex and complicated. Wideman said “Maybe they are
foreground and background, propping each other up.” (Wideman 784). Although there might be no specific answer to this inquiry, I have
grown closer to a world I never knew had an explanation to. A world where I could understand further about the reasons behind a mother’s
anger.
