Reading Response
5 points, per response
Due: multiple dates: see course schedule
Reading responses are designed to develop our reading and writing skills and give us a purpose for
reading the assigned readings (or texts). As you read a text, underline key ideas and areas where you have
a personal reaction. Personal reactions are points where you agree, disagree, or do a little of both. Space
permitting, jot down notes in the margins to help you locate where you agree and/or disagree as well as
other ideas you wish to find later. This active reading strategy will save you time and help you
remember the text’s key points better.
Once you have finished reading the text, in an MLA formatted paper, type your response in a paragraph
that includes the following:
1. Start with an introduction of the author by full name (first, middle, last names) and the text’s
title. Be sure to put titles of short works in quotes and long works in italics (see table below).
2. Contextualize the point you agree/disagree by offering a brief summary of the text and the
point/subpoint being discussed in 1 – 3 sentences. Be careful not to over summarize the text,
where you offer a detailed account of all major and minor points. Summaries should be focused
to your response.
3. This brings me to your personal response where you will cite or paraphrase the passage or idea
that you agree or disagree with. After you directly or indirectly quote the passage, explain why
this point had some impact on you. This explanation should take up the majority of your
paragraph.
An example of how to format your paper and cite a source in MLA and how to write a reading response is
on the back of this page.

Reading Response: Signs of Life Introduction
Sign of Life in the USA chapter introduction, “Popular Signs: Or, Everything You Always
Knew about American Culture (but Nobody Asked),” Sonia Maasik and Jack Solomon present a
conceptual framework of studying signs within our popular culture called semiotics. Under the
heading “From Folk to For-Profit,” they explain how the entertainment culture “are linked by a
common imperative to entertain” (6). I agree with this statement, yet disagree with their
“imperative” is solely to entertain. Take TV news, whether cable or local, for instance. The
platform is to entertain, with their invited guests to speak on one issue or another. Yet these news
corporations also have an agenda; for example, Fox news pushes conservative values while CNN
promotes a liberal agenda. Though viewers are entertained by their programming, they are also
being manipulated into accepting ideologies pushed by the news corporations, consequently,
stereotypes are perpetuated and assumptions about others go unchallenged.
