Assignment 4: Analysis of Medieval Architecture
Susanne Cowan
Fall 2019
200 points, Due Dec 11
Option 1: Tour Guide Through Medieval Europe, Africa, Middle East, or India
Option 2: Open Topic Essay on a Medieval Church, Mosque, or Other Building/Landscape
Option 3: Historiographical Essay Comparing Trachtenberg’s Analysis to Other Scholars
Option 1: Tour Guide
• Choose a country or geographic region with at least three medieval buildings covered in the
class (or closely related in style and time period to buildings we studied.)
• Example countries or regions may be France, England, Turkey, India, or Africa.
• Produce a tour guide that introduces a lay audience to the architectural features of the three
buildings. You may want to choose a theme to focus on to tie the buildings together.
• Include some background information on the place during the medieval period.
• The guide may take many creative forms including a brochure, website, travel video, etc.
• Depending on your formatting the project should be about 3-4 pages (400-1000 words.)
• You are encouraged to use images and to cite the source for those images in the caption.
• Include bibliographic information. Use in-text or footnoted citations if you use quotes, but most
information should be in your own words.
Option 2: Open Topic Essay
• Choose a building from Lectures in week 11-14, such as a Medieval Church or Mosque.
• Choose a theme to study about the building such as: construction innovations, use of light,
religious symbolism, ritual uses, patronage, references to history, historic restoration, etc.
• Write a 3-4 page (500-1000 words), 5-paragraph style essay (with an intro and conclusion with
a thesis, and evidence paragraphs with sub-arguments) about the building and theme.
• Use at least three sources footnoted in Chicago style. Cited images may be included.
Option 3: Historiographical Essay
• This option allows you to explore the Trachtenberg essay from the reading response in more
detail, to understand it within the context of other academic writings.
• Read the Trachtenberg essay “Suger’s Miracles, Branner’s Bourges.”
• Look for themes while reading, such as:
• What distinctions does he make between Romanesque and Gothic architecture?
• How does he define Romanesque and Gothic differently than standard histories?
• How does he use the ideas of modernity and historicism to challenge stylistic definitions?
• Choose one case study from the essay (for example Saint Denis or Bourges).
• Look for 2 or more other sources (textbooks, books, or articles) that cover that case study.
• Analyze how Trachtenberg’s interpretations differ from those of other scholars.
• Write a 3-4 page (500-1000 word) essay. Images may be included to support your analysis.
Option 4: NCUR:
• You may submit an abstract and an outline/draft of the paper you plan to present at NCUR.
• See the syllabus for more information.
Submission:
Work should be submitted on D2L by 11pm on Dec 11. Please submit as a PDF.
No late work will be accepted without the instructor’s permission.
