Instructions/Guidelines
A. Double space all pages. If writing by hand, write on every other line only. Write on only one side
of the page.
B. Use black or blue ink or DARK pencil and write legibly if writing by hand.
C. Student can bring a one-page outline to the exit essay. This is a sentence-level or topic-level outline
only, and this pre-writing must be attached to the final document. It is up to the individual teacher
whether or not students can use front and back. One suggestion is to allow students a printed copy
of the topics page and then write on the back of that page. Again, that is at the discretion of the
individual instructor. Students who bring an extensive draft will receive a 0 on the exam and will
fail ENG 101.
D. Students MUST refer to at least one article in this essay. This reference can come in the form of a
quote, summary, or paraphrase. It MUST be properly documented in the essay. This article must
be retrieved from EBSCOhost. Students are allowed to reference up to three articles in the essay.
Any articles cited in the paper MUST come from EBSCOhost. All articles cited in the paper must
be referenced in a properly formatted MLA Works Cited page. Any essays that include
plagiarized statements will automatically receive a 0 on the exam and will fail ENG 101.
E. A correctly formatted MLA Works Cited page must be attached to the essay. This Works Cited
page can include up to three sources. All sources used MUST be retrieved from the assigned
databases. It is recommended that students use the citation feature in the database.
F. Students must bring printed copies of their articles (up to three) with them to the Exit Essay exam.
Articles cannot contain notes. However, all quotes or paraphrased passages used must be
highlighted. Students should staple the citation page to the article. Students will be required to
turn in the article along with the outline and the essay.
G. ONLINE STUDENTS will follow guidelines provided by the instructor related to turning in the
copy of the articles.
H. A minimum of five well-developed paragraphs is expected. This essay is typically two to four
pages (around 600 to 800 words) in length when typed and double spaced.
I. Number all pages in the upper right corner.
J. Pages after page one should be numbered with the student’s last name and page number (example:
Jones 4)
K. Essays should be in third person only.
L. Heading on the first page should include the following: student’s name, date, name of course, and
instructor’s name.
M. Essays must have a title.
N. If essay is typed, students must use Times New Roman size 12 font only.
All instructors must adhere to these guidelines. Mandatory deductions will be taken for papers not
formatted properly.
Exit Essay (Revised Fall 2019)
1. According to the American Psychological Association in 2013, “anxiety is the top
presenting concern among college students (41.6 percent),”and over 80% of college
students reported to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America that they had
felt overwhelmed by their many responsibilities and commitments in the past year.
College students typically face a multitude of stressors, which may impact both their
academic and personal lives in varying ways and degrees. With this information in mind,
how can/should institutions of higher education be more supportive of students’ mental
health and better assist students facing their mental health challenges in achieving
academic success?
2. The Quad magazine reports that the number of students choosing to attend
trade/vocational schools rather than traditional colleges has nearly doubled since 1999,
observing, “trade schools are adding students roughly as fast as colleges are losing them.”
Discuss reasons for this upward trend in enrollment in trade programs in the United
States and suggest both advantages and disadvantages of pursuing credentials in a trade
rather than working toward a traditional bachelor’s degree.
3. In a world driven by technology, it is no surprise that online education is becoming more
mainstream. Online education offers students a flexible schedule, cheaper costs, and even
the ability to avoid social anxiety that is often found in the classroom. However, one can
argue that obtaining an education online lacks the advantages that are present only in a
face-to-face classroom setting. Discuss the aspects that define a quality education. Do
online courses provide the same high-quality education that is expected from a physical
classroom, or is it lacking one of those key qualities?
4. Today’s high school students, like high school students since the institution’s existence,
must meet a number of curricular requirements for graduation: math, English, history,
physical education, science, etc. However, are these courses enough to prepare students
for life after high school? What ONE course is a logical addition to the requirements for
high school graduation? What content would be covered in this course, and why is this
content necessary?
5. People are often discouraged or even sometimes forbidden from pursuing friendships or
romantic relationships that could be considered “non-traditional.” Discuss the potential
challenges and benefits that come with having a non-traditional friendship, family, and/or
relationship.
6. In 1816 Thomas Jefferson wrote to Charles Yancey, declaring that, “if a nation expects
to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilisation, it expects what never was and never will
be.” Obviously, Jefferson was convinced that it was every citizen’s duty to be informed.
In your essay, please consider the following questions: What does it mean to be an
“informed citizenry,” and how might our freedom depend it? Where and how should we
gather information, and how should we evaluate it? Is Jefferson’s statement true in the
twenty-first century?
7. In “Why Modern Monsters Have Become Alien to Us” (U. S. Catholic, 1996), Patrick J.
McCormick expresses concern that, while “real stories inspire, upset, disturb, and
haunt us,” modern monster movies and video games have only the “thinnest of plot
lines.” He believes they encourage a “fight or flight response,” leaving us with no sense
of remorse when the alien monster is obliterated on the theater screen or in the virtual
world. How might these entertainments be contributing to the culture of mindless
violence that has become increasingly common in the daily news? Is violence becoming
our new normal? What can be done about it?
