The way this is reading it sounds like you’re trying to make the case
that BPD impact sexuality which is usually applied to be sexual
orientation. There is not any lit showing that that is any more prevalent
in any group. There are other places where it sounds like you’re
saying BPD drives sexual addiction and misbehavior which would
make sense, but not clear what model you’re using.
Also need to be clearer about what specific lit you’re pulling from to
make the case for this as being clear about what method you’re using.
This says qual but in other places you seem to be talking about a
causal relationship which would by definition be quant.

CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a major health problem, whose prevalence has
challenged psychologists and healthcare professionals. The main challenge with this disorder is
in the unclarity of its causes and influencers of its adverse effects on patients. Common
characteristics of BP include negative affectivity, impairment in interpersonal functioning,
antagonism, disinhibition, and enhanced impulsive aggression (Deuter et al., 2015). BPD can
also be defined as a pervasive and debilitating psychological condition with a prevalence of
28.5% in clinical populations and up to 1.6% among the community sample (Tan et al., 2018).
The disorder also presents an array of severity characterized by a vulnerability in interpersonal
relationships, instability in emotions, and a disturbing capacity in interpreting all mental states
(Kvarstein et al., 2019).
Based on this information on BPD, it is clear that it is a significant health and
psychological problem whose root and escalation need to be wholesomely investigated. There
have been studies suggesting that BPD and human sexuality are related (Coleman et al., 2018;
Frías et al., 2017; Northey et al., 2016; Sansone & Sansone, 2011). However, it is still unclear on
the specific personality traits that contribute to the severity of BPD and human sexuality.
Therefore, this case-control study aims at investigating the relationship between BPD and human
sexuality thereby expanding on the personality features contributing to sexual sensation seeking,
sexual compulsivity, and sexual risk-taking behaviors.
Background of the Study
There is some information that are already known with BPD. That is, BPD and human
sexuality are related. For example, sexual masochism in women is a risk factor to BPD (Frías et

al., 2017). This makes BPD to be more prevalent in women than in men. Also, people with BPD
are more likely to show higher sexual preoccupation, engage in casual sexual relationships, have
an earlier sexual exposure, and report a variety of sexual partners (Sansone & Sansone, 2011).
This shows that human sexuality and BPD are related.
Do not start paragraph with conjunctions However, what needs to be known so far is the
personality traits that connect human sexuality to BPD and vice versa. Certainly, there are human
personality features that can be used to explain the occurrence of sexual sensation seeking,
sexual compulsivity, and sexual risk-taking behaviors. These considerations will certainly
advance the knowledge of BPD traits and human sexuality and this is the target of the proposed
research.
Knowledge through findings in this research is expected to serve the stakeholders such as
care providers, families, scientists, patients, and institutions. That is, the knowledge will inform
these stakeholders of the origin of BPD beyond human sexuality. This will assist in deciding in
intervention measures that can be used to prevent further escalation of BPD by specifically
addressing the personality traits that contribute to these sexual behaviors.

human sexuality. It has even been shown the specific sexual characteristics associated with BPD
to include sexual sensations seeking, sexual compulsivity, and sexual risk-taking behaviors.
However, there is little or no evidence of personality traits that contribute to sexual behaviors in
patients with BPD.

The problem of different sexual behaviors about BPD is significant and needs to be
addressed. It has been shown that BPD has a 1.6% prevalence in the general community and is
28.5% prevalent among clinical populations. Need to Cite / clinical population for what? At the
same time, it has been shown that there is a correlation between sexual coercion, lack of
exclusivity in a relationship, and mate poaching and psychopathy traits (Khan et al., 2017).
Having been shown that BPD and sexuality are related Sexuality usually means sexually
preference.. The Khan et al. (2017) study is a hint that personality features can influence human
sexuality, but it has not been investigated yet. This research extends the existing research to
determine the specific personality features that cause different sexual behaviors and their
relationship with BPD. By so doing, this research is purposed to investigate the personality
features that contribute to these sexual behaviors in individuals with BPD.
Significance of the Study
The proposed study is significant in that it helps in generating new findings that are
aimed at advancing the base of scientific knowledge. That is, there is a possibility that personal
features cause different sexual behaviors. However, it has long been seen that sexual behaviors
are controlled, to a larger extent, by BPD. This may not be the case unless the research is done.
Through the proposed research, it is suggested that new knowledge will be added that greatly
helps in determining the root cause of BPD.
The proposed research is original. This is because there is currently no research But what
lit calls for this need? that specifically shows personality features and their relationship with
human sexuality. In fact, it is largely shown that human sexuality causes BPD Shown where?
Need to cite. and vice versa. However, through this research, it can be shown that personal
features may cause sexual behaviors separately from having been caused by BPD.

Research Question
The investigation will be guided by the following research questions:
[RQ1] What personality features contribute to human sexuality? What are you meaning by
“personality features”?
[RQ2] How do these personality features contribute to sexual sensation seeking, sexual
compulsivity, and sexual risk-taking behaviors?
[RQ3] How do personality traits relate to BPD?
Definition of Terms
The following terms will be actively used in the proposed research:
Borderline personality traits: These are symptoms of BPD that are observable in a patient. Need
citations to support all of these.
Human sexuality: These are sexual behaviors that individuals exhibit either as a result of BPD
or as a risk factor to BPD.
Personality features: These are unique personal characteristics that contribute to various sexual
behaviors.
Sexual sensation seeking: This is the propensity to seek for new or risky sexual stimulation.
Sexual compulsivity: This is a sexual behavior characterized by sexual addiction causing
repetitive and intense sexual urges.
Sexual risk-taking behaviors: These are behaviors related to seeking new sexual stimulation
outside a stable sexual relationship.

This research is intended to be done through a qualitative study of the casecontrol study. First, individuals meeting DSM-IV criteria for BPD will be considered to
participate in the study. From these, a sample will be randomly selected. Additionally, a
randomly selected sample from individuals with other personality disorders will be recruited into
the proposed study.
After the sample has been selected, a structured clinical interview will be
administered through sexual disorder modules. Here, several personality and psychosexual
features will be measured. It is the clinical interview that will be used for the measurement of
personality disorders using the DSM-IV axis. Also, a structured clinical interview will be used to
investigate the comorbidity of the occurrence of various sexual behaviors. Specifically, sexual
behaviors to be investigated in this research will include sexual sensation seeking, sexual
compulsivity, and sexual risk-taking behaviors. These sexual behaviors will be measured against
personality traits that have been identified from patients with BPD and patients from the sample
of those with other personality disorders.
Data analysis is then done to determine it is BPD that causes these personality features or
other personality disorders that cause different personality traits. After this, the relationship
between the different personality features and sexual behaviors will be analyzed. This will help
to determine the actual relationship between BPD traits and human sexuality.
Ethically, clinical permission will be sought before recruiting participants into the study.
After the permission has been granted, consent will be obtained from the participants and only
those who agree will be included in the study. The consent will be obtained after explaining the
intention of the study and all the parameters that it will be measuring. After the consent, the
study will be carried pout and the data reported.

Summary
Borderline personality disorder is a mental disorder that is characterized by unstable
moods, behavior, and relationships. BPD has challenged psychologists and healthcare
professionals with the unclarity of its causes and influencers of its adverse effects on people.
Studies have suggested that BPD and human sexuality are connected, however, it is still unclear
on the specific personality traits that contribute to the severity of BPD and human sexuality
(Coleman et al., 2018; Frías et al., 2017; Northey et al., 2016; Sansone & Sansone, 2011).
Investigating the correlation between BPD and human sexuality will help expand on the
personality characteristics influencing sexual sensation seeking, sexual compulsivity, and sexual
risk-taking behaviors. The qualitative case-control study will assist and extend in deciding
intervention measures that can be used to prevent further escalation.
CHAPTER 2. LITERATURE REVIEW
Note, this is typically the entry point for beginning the project. It is important to
understand that the project is iterative. You will work on, change and refine all elements of the
project. You will begin by understanding and synthesizing what is known so far in the Literature
Review, (Chapter 2).
