Japanese Woodblocks
View the images of the Japanese woodblock prints. The assignment is to analyze the prints
closely, take detailed notes, and use the questions included below, to write a 400-500 word
essay. Your essay should describe the woodblock print and demonstrate close observation of
the materials and techniques used to create the print as well as a description of the subject
matter.
*In addition to writing your essay, you must also attach your notes.
Instructions
1. Look through all of the images of the various prints.
2. Choose a print to use for your essay response.
3. Zoom in on the image (they are high quality images—take advantage of this!) and look
closely at all of the details (including wrinkles, dirt, tears, ink).
4. Take fifteen to twenty minutes to look closely at the print and take detailed notes about
the material, colors, linework, and composition.
5. Consider the questions included for the assignment and take notes to answer these in
detail.
6. Write your essay based on your detailed notes and upload your typed essay and your
notes to the assignment folder.
Your essay should be well organized and does not need to address the questions in the order
that they are listed. Most importantly for this assignment you must include your assessment of
how this can be identified as a print and not a painting.

For your essay, explain why you chose this work in comparison to the others.
Describe the subject matter. How does the artist represent the subject matter in print
form? What colors are used and how would you describe the linework?
How is the subject matter portrayed in the space? (For example, what do you notice
about the layout of the objects/figures in the image? Is there much empty space? Are
there specific aspects focused on within the image?)
Are there areas that display features of this being a woodblock print?
What are features that demonstrate the process of making this as a print?
Can you determine from the linework and use of color that this is a print and not a
painting? Can you determine if the color is added by brush or by layers of pigment in a
print format?
What do you notice about lines and where color begins and ends? What might this tell
you about how this is made?
Are there details about the application of color that assist you in determining order of
application of the colors?
Can you observe details of the process like the wood grain of the woodblock? Are there
portions that are flat or textured?
