RESEARCH PAPER INSTRUCTIONS
Your paper must be at least the required length [longer does not mean better], typed, spell checked, and checked by someone else, including a writing tutor and/or the Each One Teach One Workshop – EOTO. [Good faith participants in EOTO are guaranteed at least a “C” on their paper.] Topics for your Research Papers must be chosen in consultation with the instructor. For each paper, you have a wide range of selection. You may choose ANY theme which fits within the actual scope of the course including any combination of the chapters and subchapters in the two texts and/or the supplementary readings. This includes elaborating on an issue touched on in class as well as in your readings. You may choose to assess recent, apparently conflicting, research studies, or analyze a current social problem or issue involving any aspect of the topic covered by this class (but please remember – analyses, not polemics, are required here). You may choose a topic which, while mainly unique, touches on the themes chosen by other students. To insure appropriateness and to avoid duplication, your topic MUST be approved. And once approved, it can only be changed in direct verbal consultation with the instructor. In addition to exploring any current debate on your precise topic and including any relevant studies, you must clearly state your own view on the issue[s]/theme[s] which you are examining. Your bibliography must include at least 5 conventional academic journal articles, anthology chapters, or books. Your paper must be at least the required length [5 pages for SOC 101, 10 pages for other classes] plus quotes, notes, charts, maps, photos, appendices and references, etc. While your bibliography may contain a url for a source, you must include complete conventional reference information for finding each of your 5 academic reference sources offline. All bibliographic references must use the appropriate citation format as illustrated by The Little Seagull Handbook. The bibliography in your final paper should include complete reference information listing ALL of your sources for ideas as well as for quotations in alphabetical order by the last name of the first author of each work. Do not number your references or place them in footnotes. Use in-text citation only.

[For students having trouble getting started] Items that you can consider addressing in your paper:
1. What is your topic? Why did you choose it?
2. Why is it sociologically important?
3. Which chapter[s] in your text books are highly relevant to your topic? Discuss briefly in detail.
4. Have there been any major changes in society because of your topic? What? Explain how?
5. What are the types of research methodologies that would best help someone to conduct research on your topic?
6. Are there any sociological theories or perspectives that would better explain your topic?
7. Is this topic best understood by Sociological research or by other disciplines in the social sciences?
8. What have scholars said about your topic? This is your review of the literature.
9. Be sure to include your own thoughts, including your own response to these questions:
a. How has your research experience enriched your classroom experience?
b. How has the knowledge you gained from class helped with your research project?

Key Components of Term Paper
You are responsible for conducting a literature review for your topic of research. This should NOT be a separate part of your paper. You must also conduct at least two interviews.

1. Scholarly Journal Reviewing: Find five (5) scholarly journal articles that examine your topic or aspects of it. What do scholars think about your topic? Critically review these journal articles. Do you agree with them? Do the various authors agree or disagree with each other? [Explain]

Wikipedia and magazine & newspaper articles [i.e. Newsweek, Ebony, Time, The Economist, The New York Times, etc.] are not acceptable scholarly references. A few examples of appropriate academic Journals include: Social Forces, American Journal of Sociology, Race and Society, American Sociological Review, Black Scholar. See also A Guide to Writing Sociology Papers for a longer list of journals. You can also access full-text journals from the online VALE system [now attached to Moodle] or research using Google Scholar. Remember that your 5 scholarly references must include complete conventional reference information.

2. Interviews: Interview at least two (2) people who are either involved in or affected by your topic (not someone in this class). Ask them questions about their experiences regarding your topic and the subject of this course. Document their perceptions of how they have been impacted or are being affected today. What resources were or were not available to them? How did this enhance or impede their own development—intellectual, social, economic, etc.? You should include your interview questions as an appendix in addition to your pages of text. You may also use selected quotations from your interviewees in your paper. Do NOT provide the full interview.

For your own records, you may want to video or audiotape the interviews, or take written notes. You must ask for the interviewee’s permission before you can record the interview. A recording of the session will help you later when you do your write-up.

From your syllabus:

NOTE: All writing assignments must be typewritten double-spaced, using Times New Roman or Arial fonts size 12. Please present all required assignments electronically, submitting at least the minimum full pages [plus quotes, notes, charts, photos, and references]. Use 1” margins for all assignments. Padding tactics [skipping extra lines, using wide margins, oversize fonts, etc.] are a form of academic dishonesty and will not be tolerated. Although each of your papers will be graded primarily for content, it is your responsibility to correct your paper for spelling, grammar, and accurate and proper citations and quotations. LET SOMEONE ELSE READ IT TO BE SURE THAT IT SAYS WHAT YOU WANT IT TO SAY. Any paper submitted late will be penalized at the rate of 10 % per class day overdue. You are strongly encouraged to submit your assignments to Moodle/Turnitin in advance so that you can see the % similarity and CHANGE your paper. Use the SIMILARITY CHECKER to preview a draft. You cannot make changes to your submitted assignments after the date due. If your similarity score is over 10 %, the difference will be multiplied by 4 and subtracted from your initial grade on the assignment. [Your Bibliography and quotations will be excluded. Your references MUST be titled Bibliography.] High similarity scores usually indicate Plagiarism. Re-submissions after the due date are not allowed. You will be graded on the submission which is uploaded as of the due date. [Participants who successfully complete Each One Teach One are the sole exception to this.] …….. Please submit all your writing assignments, prepared as MS Word documents, through Moodle. You should find, check and save your digital receipts for all of your Moodle-submitted assignments. If you have upload problems, see Dr. Pinderhughes immediately and bring an electronic copy of the assignment with you. If, due to documented online problems, you get permission to submit a hard copy, it will only be accepted if stapled.

All writing assignments, required and voluntary, will include four single-spaced lines at the top of page one with your name, your professor’s name, the course & section number, and the date of submission [not the date due]. Please center your title. For all pages except the first, each assignment will include a one-line header, consisting of your last name, a few key words from your title, your course & section number, and the page number. No Cover page. No abstract.
