Chapter 4

1. The media has an important influence on people’s attitudes toward alcohol and other drugs. For this question, observe a variety of television programs and/or commercials to determine how drug and alcohol use is presented to viewers. For example, you might note the number of males and females in beer commercials, the ways in which sexual images are combined with drinking beer, or the extent to which “stars” or athletic figures promote drinking in beer and wine commercials. If you don’t see many commercials, then gather information from three or four of your favorite shows (especially day or night dramas). Observe how much drinking takes place as a “normal” part of daily life (e.g., how often people are seen drinking, offered a drink, have open bars in their homes, drink with a meal, or drink and drive). Write about the information you gather (using the names of the shows or types of commercials) and determine how you believe this impacts alcohol problems in the United States. Make sure to integrate facts from the textbook to support your question such as rates of alcoholism, definition of binge drinking or some other relevant information.

Chapter 5

1. Although the murder rate vastly declined (54%) from 1991 to 2014, some areas still tend to be more violent than others. Many are unaware that the South is the most violent region in the nation. Using at least 2 (Functionalism, Conflict, or Symbolic Interactionism) of the theoretical theories, explain why you believe this is the case.

1. Some believe that juveniles should not be tried as adults, while others feel that they are responsible for the crimes that they commit and should be tried for violent offenses. Do you believe juveniles should be tried as adults? Why do you believe juveniles pursue a life of crime? What is your suggestion for eliminating or reducing juvenile delinquency?
