Time management the best alternative to combat college stress

One can’t avoid stress because “stress is a necessary and unavoidable concomitant of daily living.”(Kamana Tripathi and Krishna Sharma 1) Since stress can not be avoided, dealing with it straightforward can be handled with being more in control and organized. That is where time management comes in handy.

time management is able to minimize the stress that comes with college.what could be causing college stress, well “Students report experiencing academic stress at predictable times each semester with the greatest sources of academic stress resulting from taking and studying for exams, grade competition, and the large amount of content to master in a small amount of time.”(Abrouserie,1994; Archer& Lamnin,1985;Britton&tesser,1991;Khon&Frazer,1986)(page 2).

This can lead to a loss of problem-solving skills and control. All these tasks can be overwhelming by asking those directly affected by academic stress as an example. To combat the multiple academic demands of college one should use time management

Time management is planing a set of times for a task throughout the 24hrs, it can be from work, school, and self-care. One can start learning to use time management by getting a journal or planner, schedule, or what most already commonly do a to-do list.  This tool can assist in handling the time one has in a day without wishing for more time but still be in control of how their time is spent. In the article by Mirsa, Ranjita, and Mckean, Michelle regarding “college students’ academic stress…” it is mentioned that “the findings are also consistent with stress research showing that feeling in control of the situation is related to lower levels of stress.”

Without time management, a college student can lean towards unhealthy coping mechanisms that can lead to more stress after. Those alternatives “Students often use less desirable coping strategies such as alcohol, smoking, and using illegal drugs.”(K. Kumar and S.Kadhivarvan 1) Students with potential ruined by these coping mechanisms because they did not have any other positive alternatives taught. High school to college is a contributor because of the different playing field high school has.one can see those especially affected “within a college social system, freshman and sophomores lack the strong social support networks and have not yet developed the coping mechanisms used by juniors and seniors to deal with stress”.(Allen & Heibert 1991)Therefore, one can theorize high school did not teach them the self expectancy of managing one’s time.

High school should enforce and teach future college freshmen and sophomores the resourcefulness one can do when they “organize time schedule assignment due dates, and begging work a week in advance, an adjustment that can accommodate technological malfunctions and breaks.”(Tripathi and Sharma 1164)It should be enforced to educated that time management can help lessen the academic burden, to give a chance for incoming college students to hand them a planner for the future.
