Read Lillian Faderman, The Gay Revolution: The Story of the Struggle (Simon Schuster 2016) and watch the video on the Stonewall uprising identified in the syllabus.  After reading the entire text and watching the video, USING YOUR OWN WORDS, address the following questions in 4 pages of single spaced text, Word formatted, (normal 1 inch margins and 12 point font). Be sure to thoroughly document your paper, citing to page numbers (from the book) and time references (from the videos), to support your findings and demonstrate that you have read the book and watched all of the videos.

1. Based on Faderman’s text, identify the primary rights and protections that have been pursued during what many people refer to as the “Gay Rights Movement.”

2. According to Faderman, what major events and people (political, legal, and social) mark the origin, progression, and current state of the movement for sexual orientation and sexual identity equality?

3. According to Faderman, what were (are) the primary political, social, and economic barriers that prevent(ed) or make (made) it more difficult for GLBTQ individuals to have full and equal legal rights and protections in the United States?

4. What methods have been used by gay-rights and sexual-identity advocates to obtain tangible legal protections against discrimination and for equality. How effective were (are) these methods?  What were (are) the limitations to these methods?

5. Identify and describe the oppositional sources of power that serve as “push backs” to advancements in sexual orientation/identity equality in America? What is the nature of these oppositional forces?  What is their motivation?  What methods were employed by these groups/forces?  What was the most effective response by civil rights groups to these oppositional tactics?
