In a 6 pg paper, discuss the topic of EITHER Race/Culture, Class, or Gender in relation to Jane Eyre. Obviously there may be areas where these overlap – but I want you to pay particular attention to the ways in which the text’s treatment of the particular concept provides insight into the world of C19th British society, as well as the author’s own engagement with that world.

Effective papers will develop analysis that is fresh and innovative, that does not summarize plot, but provides keen insights, beginning very definitively with a thesis that is a conclusion at which you have already arrived. The stronger papers will incorporate secondary sources/references to the contextual materials we have read in class. I have kept the topic purposely broad so that you can narrow your focus based upon your own intellectual curiosity. Strive for depth rather than breadth.
