CITATION: Illinois v. Caballes, 543 U.S. 405 (2005).
FACTS:
An Illinois state trooper stopped a motorist for speeding and radioed in. A second trooper, overhearing the transmission, drove to the scene with his narcotics-detection dog and walked the dog around the car while the first trooper wrote the motorist a warning ticket. When the dog alerted at the automobiles trunk, the officers searched the trunk, found marijuana, and made an arrest. Caballes was convicted of the drug offense and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment and a fine of $256,136. The Illinois Supreme Court reversed the conviction. The case was appealed to the United States Supreme Court.
