The imposter syndrome is a psychological term referring to a pattern of behavior where people doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent, often internalized fear of being exposed as a fraud. Not an actual disorder, the term was coined by clinical psychologists Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes in 1978, when they found that despite having adequate external evidence of accomplishments, people with imposter syndrome remained convinced that they dont deserve the success they have.
Fear is a vital response to physical and emotional danger; it has strong roots in human evolution. If people didnt feel fear, they couldnt protect themselves from legitimate threats.
Managing fears in today’s world can be confusing when they don’t necessarily correlate with a clear or obvious danger. If fear is overtaking an individual’s life, pursuing therapy can help. A qualified therapist can help a patient find ways to let go of fears, develop coping mechanisms, and look for positivity in fear-inducing situations.
