1. WHAT IS THE WAR ON DRUGS?

How has this war informed the way we deal with the sale and use of drugs in the U.S? Provide at least three examples of official drug policies / laws that have been developed as part of the war on drugs, and discuss whether these policies / laws have been successful.

2. HOW AND WHY DID THE WAR ON DRUGS BEGIN?

Provide at least two examples of historical / social issues that have shaped the initiation and maintenance of the war on drugs in the U.S.

3. WHY HAVEN’T WE CHANGED OUR APPROACH?

If we know that the war on drugs has not been successful, why haven’t we changed our approach? Who stands to benefit from this war? Provide at least two examples of obstacles to changing current drug policy or reasons that we have maintained the status quo.

4. HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE SYSTEM?

How would you change things to improve the current system? Provide at least three examples of policies, programs, or laws that you might enact that you believe would be more successful than the ones in place right now. Be sure to discuss how you might address current obstacles to the implementation of these policies.

5. WHY SHOULD WE FOCUS ON REHABILITATION?

Why should we focus on rehabilitation, treatment, and prevention of drugs? Provide at least three examples of the benefits of shifting our focus to dealing with drug addiction through rehabilitation, treatment, and/or prevention.
