Answer each questions below at least 300 words.

  1. Compare and contrast Zuni child-rearing practices and contemporary American child-rearing practices. In particular, reflect on the significance of this passage: “The result of these practices, as [Frank Hamilton] Cushing observed, was the development of ‘admirable self-control’ on the part of children. ‘These dear little brown-eyed, smooth-skinned mites,’ he wrote, . . . ‘were so gentle to one another and especially to their elders withal, that I came to love them as I have loved no other children on earth.’ Zuni children learned to conform to ideals of nonaggressive, mild, and cooperative behavior—to be k’okshi—and to avoid appearing sulky, greedy, uncooperative, impolite, or lazy, behaviors that were considered ‘childish.’ The young boy who delivered the appropriate formal speech upon a visit, the brother and sister who never fought, the youngster who never lost his temper—these were the children who received praise from adults.” How does this description of the behavior of children in Zuni society compare to your experience with American children? What kinds of child-rearing practices (or cultural values) do you think account for the behaviors of Zuni and contemporary American children?
  2. What struck you as interesting about the different “rites of gender” that are explained in Chapter 5? How do these rituals reflect Zuni attitudes towards men, women, and berdaches? How are these rites of passage different from our own? How do the attitudes they reflect differ from our attitudes?
  3. Roscoe tells us that “because [Matilda] Stevenson fulfilled male social roles, the Zunis gave her male prayer sticks to plant” (144). To what degree was Matilda Stevenson a gender outlaw in 19th Century America? Would she be considered a gender outlaw today? How have gender rules for women changed in America since the 19th Century, and what do these changes say about the nature of gender? You might also discuss the relationship between We’Wha and Matilda Stevenson. What was unusual about this relationship? How did other people see their relationship? What did the two have in common? To what degree did their ambiguous gender status enhance their bond?
  4. Based on what you have read so far, what are some of the ways that the matrilineal, matrilocal nature of Zuni society makes it different from our society? What are some of the impacts of matrilineal descent and matrilocal residence on people’s attitudes, values, and ways of life? What are the advantages and/or disadvantages of matrilineal kinships systems? Based on what you’ve read so far, does there seem to be more or less gender equality in matrilineal societies? Support your answers with specific evidence from the text.
