Make sure to answer these questions basing ONLY on Chapter 4 of the book They Say I Say by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein and on Chapter 7 of the book David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell:

In Chapter 4 of They Say / I Say, Birkenstein and Graff demonstrate the three main ways to respond what they have to say. Simply put, you can agree (or say yes), you can disagree (or say no), or you can agree conditionally (or say okay, but).

You also checked out a Crash Course Philosophy video that discussed the uncertainty inherent in inductive and abductive reasoning. This uncertainty is a pretty good place to start when disagreeing or agreeing conditionally, as it provides an ideal entry point for offering your own argument.

For today’s discussion, I’d like you to put all of this into practice as we take another look at Chapter 7 of David and Goliath. (It’s the Rosemary Lawlor chapter that we discussed the other day.) Please consider Gladwell’s argument on legitimacy, offer a concise they say explanation of it (with or without a quote from the text — your choice), and then give your I say in which you either agree, disagree, or agree conditionally. Be sure to offer support from your argument; you can use hypothetical examples, examples from your own life, or some inductive or abductive reasoning.
