John Lewis was a civil rights leader during the era of Martin Luther King Jr. His leadership and courage started at the age of just 17. Where he attended the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee. Whilst there, he was educated about non-violent protests. He was arrested after he organized sit-ins against segregated lunch counters. He became a freedom rider in 1961, and in 1963, he went on to become the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He helped plan and even was the youngest speaker at the March on Washington. With the help of Hosea Williams, they led a march from Selma to Montgomery. During this march, Lewis was severely beaten and was left with a fractured skull. This day, March 7, 1965, was from now on labeled as “Bloody Sunday.” In 1986, he ran and was elected for the House of Representatives where he served until his death on July 17, 2020. In a statement from Obama he said stated that Lewis “loved this country so much that he risked his life and blood so that it might live up to its promise. And through decades, he not only gave all of himself to the cause of freedom and justice, but inspired generations that followed to try to live up to his example.” (Malveaux, Fox, Karimi, Griggs)
