Language Functions
Read Chapter 9 in the textbook with close attention to the section on the four functions of a language. Note the sample utterances in Exercise 2 (p. 125) to highlight functions of a language provided by Van Herk. Provide one example each of referential, phatic, directive, and expressive utterances. Utterances should only be one sentence long. For each utterance, provide a situation of positive face wants and negative face wants. Situations can be longer than a sentence. Clearly relate each utterance to its function type and situation.
