Epidemiological studies fall into two broad categories: 1) Descriptive Epidemiology and 2) Analytic Epidemiology. Descriptive epidemiology studies the amount and distribution of disease within a population by person, place, and time. Analytic epidemiology focuses on the reasons why there are relatively high or low frequencies of disease in a population.
