Description
Is it a painting/sculpture/etc.
What facts about the girls dress did you list?
Did you notice the faded pink of her dress?
Does it look new?
What kind of fabric do you think it is made of, heavy or light?
Look at the folds. What do they tell you?
What does the belt look like?
What color is it?
What matches the belt color? Her hair
Look at her hairdo. Notice the individual hairs
Does the way she wears her hair match the style of her dress?
What about those strands flying loosely around her head?
Notice her shoes. What do you think they are made of?
Is there any sign of wear on the shoes?
Look closely at her legs. What color are they?
Is the color quality the same as that of her arms?
Do you notice anything unusual about her arms?
What about her hands?
Look closely at her left hand.
Is it at the same level as the rest of her body?
Try to imitate her posture.
As you imitate, where is all your weight resting?
Where is the girl located?
What facts can you gather from the background and the grass?
In what direction do the blades of grass bend?
What is the difference between the area where she is
sitting and the top of the hill?
Do you see the road?
Did you notice what material the road is made of?
How many buildings do you see?
How are they different?
What are they made of?
What color are they?
Do they look well maintained?
Do you see the birds flying around
the barn and the fence posts?
Look at the piece of farm equipment.
How modern is it?
How many chimneys do you see?
Is there smoke coming out of them?
Do all the windows look the same?
What color is the sky and where is the light
coming from?
Look at the shadows, is all the light coming
from the same direction?
How much of the picture is sky an how much is ground?
Was the artist looking down from above or up from
below the scene?
Analysis
Discuss the elements and principles of art
and how they effect you.
Elements: Line, Value, Shape, Form, Texture, Space, Color
Principles: Unity, Variety, Balance, Rhythm, Emphasis,
Pattern, Repetition
Interpretation
Review the clues you have collected.
What do you think the artist is telling you about
the girl and her environment?
What do you think is happening in this painting?
Hold a ruler along the left slope of the roof on the main
house. Do you see how that line leads your eyes to the girl?
Notice how she is straining toward the house.
She is wearing faded colors and the house is gray and unpainted.
Why do you think such a large area of ground is visible?
Why has the artist shown separate blades of grass?
When you acted out the girls pose, did you feel the pressure
on your arms?
Did you feel the tension?
Did you notice that your legs were not carrying any weight?
Can you guess what the artist is trying to say about
the relationship between the girl and the house?
Do you sense any special feelings?
What do you think he is saying about being a part of things?
Other than the title, can you think of a word or phrase that
describes this work?
What title would you give it?
Try to go beyond the events that appear to be taking place.
Seek the general idea or theme that you believe the artist
is trying to express.
Put together the facts and your own ideas about the world,
and you will probably discover the meaning of the painting
for you.
