Thesis: Jesus of history and Christ of faith is the same person but viewed from
different perspectives, namely, historical/scholarly and confessional.
The first perspective focuses exclusively on natural events in the life of the historical
figure, his environment, and influence on other people.
The second perspective attempts to interpret Jesus’ life and teaching in light of the
divine revelation and overall biblical context. As a result, Jesus of history was an
extraordinary teacher of morality and a revolutionary who managed to transform the Jewish
and Graeco-Roman society without using violence or physical power.
Christ of faith is the incarnate God, the second person of the Trinity, God the Son,
who was promised in the Old Testament and was born to rescue all people from sin and its
consequences through the death on the cross and subsequent resurrection. Therefore, the first
perspective views Jesus as a human, and the second perspective suggests that Jesus is more
than an ordinary man since he has two natures – humanly and divine.
