Content of Analysis
Select a movie, television show, novel, or memoir1 and analyze how it reflects ONE of these topics:
Chapter 4 Analyze how information on young adult sexuality and romantic partnerships (pp. 71
– 76 in Sociology of Families) is reflected in the movie, TV show novel, or memoir. Include at least two
trends in the paper.
Chapter 5 Apply information on trends in marriage from the article Grounds for Marriage
(associated with Discussion Post 2.3) to a couple (or couples) in the movie, TV show novel, or memoir.
Include at least two trends addressed in the article. Include at least two trends in the paper.
Chapter 6 Apply information on the aspects of divorce (pp. 111 119 in Sociology of Families) to
a couple (or couples) in the movie, TV show novel, or memoir. Include at least two aspects in the paper.
Chapter 7 Analyze the way in which the movie, TV show novel, or memoir reflects how parenting
is influenced by gender, class, immigrant status, OR sexual orientation (pp. 142 152 in Sociology of
Families). Include at least two of these trends/issues in the paper.
Divide the paper into sections using the following labels:
Introduction Start with an introduction that summarizes the topic and the general way the source
illustrates the topic. The introduction should be approximately 5 sentences long.
Sociological Concepts – In this section, summarize the trends and concepts that you plan to use in
your analysis. All concepts and definitions must come from the course materials. If you use sources
outside of Sociology of Families, the notes, or supplemental readings, up to 15 points will be deducted
from your score. Do NOT discuss the movie, TV show, novel, or memoir you are analyzing in this
section. The summary of the concepts should be half a page to 1 page long.
Analysis In this section, describe the scenes and characters that illustrate the selected concepts and
trends summarized in the previous section. You can also cite dialogue as examples of the selected
concepts. This section MUST be broken up into paragraphs. The analysis should be 1.5 2 pages
long.
Conclusion The conclusion is a summary of the key points made in the analysis section, but
consider extending this in some way. For example, you could reflect on how realistically the source
portrays the concepts or bring in a final example or quote from the source that you think gets at the heart
of the topic. The conclusion should be approximately 5 sentences long.
