Learning Outcome Assessment II_ 101
Summer 2020
Introduction
Crisis management is one of the most important skills to have in life. It is important in
every aspect of life. Whether you need it in your job or even in your personal life because it will
help you in dealing with your problems. Not everyone is born with crisis management skill. In
fact, crisis management is something that you can conquer with time and learning. You could say
that in some way crisis management is a form of leadership. A good leader would know how to
deal with such crisis by dealing with it the right way. The right way is the only way to deal with
crisis. Being cautious and thinking ahead will help you maneuver in the time of crisis. There are
steps and techniques in which someone must follow to master the skill of managing a crisis. I
have watched three videos that might help us all with understanding the main aspect of crisis
management.
1. Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoQplJyz1TA
Analysis:
This video talks about managing business relationships during the Global Coronavirus
(COVID-19) Health Crisis. The speaker is Ranse Howell, Director of International Operations,
JAMS which stands for Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services. Ranse is an accomplished
leader in cross-border alternative dispute resolution, with over a decade of experience in
mediation, training, conflict management and business development. The speaker talks about the
response of business to a crisis and the challenges in supply chain. He focused on doing business
during this crisis and maintaining relationship now during this hard time is a must. He explained
that by helping each other and taking it easy right now, will help us later when we surpass this
crisis. Also, if we cannot do business during crisis and hard times then what is the point of doing
business afterward. Business is like a friendship. It stands and falls on trust between each other.
One main aspect he mentioned is to use a facilitator to find a solution during this crisis. He
explained that some business can use the service of a facilitator to enhance the creative side of
problem solving. It can also manage the emotion that surface and provide way forward to move
on. He explained that this process can happen in a variety of different ways. Either can happen in
person thought phone, video call, or whatever most appropriate mechanism of communication.
However, the most important thing is to provide people with the opportunity to share their
concerns, but also to think about creative ways to maintain the creative things and seeking
effective solutions. Another main point he talks about is recommendations for managing
commercial conflict. He suggests engaging proactively and have a process to manage the
emotion and expectation and ultimately engage with individuals, and by having a collaborative
dialogue we can certainly find a way to move forward.

Analysis:
This video is explaining the strategies to emerge from coronavirus crisis. The speaker is
Mike Rosenberg. Mike Rosenberg is an Associate Professor at IESE Business School. Professor
Rosenberg joined the faculty at IESE after working for more than 15 years as a Management
Consultant for companies such as Arthur D. Little, A.T. Kearney and Heidrich & Struggles
working in Europe, North America, and Asia. The first thing he focused on is to understand the
difference between a crisis and an accident. An accident is something we know is going to
happen, we expect it to happen more often and we are ready for it most of the time. A crisis is
different because we do not know what is happening and we are not really sure what we should
do. It is something that we do not see coming, and we are not prepared for it at the time. The
challenge is always how to keep our people safe. However, how do we do so with imperfect
information? And how do we do so in a way which does not shut down the world? He connects
these ideas with the fact that we have to deal with the crisis. He explains that if we shut down
everything and go home then the economy of the world would take a huge hit in a way that it
will break countries. The main idea of his speech was to keep people safe while also keeping the
lights on. To also maintain a certain cash flow to avoid calamity. He explains that some company
must have flexibility, adaptability, creative thinking and moving quickly during this crisis. He
explains that companies must get ready for the next thing which is about scenario planning and
building resilience into the fundamental business model. He explains that business leaders
typically do not think about the unexpected. He also explained that business leaders always think
about the future being fine. Being fine in a sense there might be more or less economic growth.
As he put it “Business as usual” is what every business leader think of the future. He ended with
pointing out that this virus is a perfect example of the “expected unexpected”. He also said that
we must learn from this virus, so we can adapt easily and faster for the next time.

Analysis:
This video talks about leadership in the times of crisis. The speaker of this video is Linda
Shell. She started by saying that leadership can be a challenge during these times. However,
someone can have effective and impactful leadership during these time with the right mindset.
She explained that in order to have effective leadership in these times, there are a few steps to
follow. Those steps are to acknowledge today’s reality, do not panic, to communicate early and
often and to take responsibility. She explains that we must acknowledge that this crisis is not a
dream, in fact it is real and very real. She mentioned that we must set the past aside, own your
present circumstance, and embrace the things will be different in the future. She explains that in
times of crises many leaders simply freeze or doing things without complete plans and that is
what many companies faces. She advises leaders to simply take their moment and breathe. Also,
she advises them to come out of this quite time with resolve not overact, but to calmly and
methodically build confidence in all their lead. She connects the fact that if a leader panic, then
their team will most likely panic because of them. In times of crisis it is important than ever to
communicate freely and openly with those we lead. She explained that communication is a
dialogue. And that leaders also need to practice active listening. She explained that precise
information delivered at the right time will enhance your team’s engagement and trust. Finally,
as leaders we must take responsibility when we have to. We do not have to act bigger than
everyone else. She explained that leader’s team will watch how they own what they do. With the
leader as the example, they will also feel comfortable doing the same. She insisted that there is
no playbook for leaders to follow during these times, however, leaders must practice selfleadership. They must take control of their reality, plans, and actions, and they will be a role
model for others to follow. She ended with a reminder that this crisis will pass and that now is
the time to influence those that you lead and improve your legacy as a leader.
Reflection
When the crisis of covid-19 started I was one of the people that could not believe what
was going on as I am sure the situation of the entire world. It was not like a believed the crisis
was a lie. It was like a shock. This is the first time in my lifetime that I feel this type of way. The
entire world living this crisis, and no one can do anything. No one was ready enough to face it. I
was struggling. Months at home and cannot go outside unless necessary. These videos have
helped me a lot. It has helped me adapt and learn more about crises and how to deal with them. It
is impossible for me to deal with any crisis, but I can only try to do what is best. I can only
imagine how I was at the beginning of this crisis, and I wish to never have that feeling again
because it is horrible.
Conclusion
Crisis management is a skill that everyone must learn more about. It is nearly impossible
to manage a crisis in the correct manner because it is unpredictable. We must know the
difference between a crisis and an accident, and we cannot complicate the two. It is not the end
of the world to have a crisis, but we have to deal with it carefully and immediately. We have to
have some protocols to follow in the times of crisis.
