Research Design and Methodology

1. Throughout America’s history, the race has formed a basis for the oppression and discrimination of the people of color whereby freedom, opportunities, and prosperity are majorly reserved for white people (Sears, Sidanius, Sidanius, & Bobo, 2000). The current racial inequalities are as a result of historical norms and policies that were put in place to maintain white supremacy. Race has been used to inhibit the upward mobility of the people of color in securing jobs, quality education, healthcare, and justice, and housing.

2. There are existing gaps in the education sector as exhibited by unequal educational achievements between European Americans and other races (André-Bechely, 2013). This is enough evidence that there is equality in educational opportunities. Research has shown that schools serving the majority of students of color have few resources compared to schools serving the whites. This paper will focus on examining the role race plays in America’s learning institutions and how racism has been used to segregate and perpetuate inequality between the whites and people of color in accessing quality education.

3.Topic: The Role of Race in American Learning Institutions.
4.Literature review: The study will review studies done in the past on the role played by racism in the education sector to establish the gaps. Among the sources to be reviewed are:
Henwood, K. (1994). Resisting Racism and sexism in academic irychology. Feminism and Psychology, 4, 41-62.
van Dijk,T. (1993). Elite discourse and racism. New Bury Park: SagePublications
De La Cancela, V. & Sotomayor, G. (1993). Rainbow warriors: Reducing institutional racism in mental health. Journal of Mental Health Counseling, 15, 55-71.
Haney, C. & Hurtado, A. (1994). The jurisprudence of race and meritocracy. Law and Human Behavior, 18 223-248.
Questions
What role does race play in school enrolment
How are teachers of color deployed
What is the role of race in leadership at the educational level

The study will employ qualitative design in data analysis and information sourcing. Direct observation and questionnaires will be used to collect opinions on racism among individuals. The participants will be college students with a sample of 30 individuals from various colleges.

Over the years, attention has been given to the role of race in private and public institutions through research and studies in the efforts to offer solutions towards addressing racism in America. This study will play a significant role in the continued fight against racism by providing possible ways of averting racism.
