It is a unique enterprise encompassing academics, human resources, sports, housing, food services, healthcare, business, legal compliance, security, research and development, international affairs, economic development, and legislative affairs. Because it deals with all these endeavors with competing interests, it gives rise to a variety of ethical dilemmas as people and functions compete for critical resources. Not every function receives an equitable share of the limited resources within an institution. Leaders must determine what and how resources are allocated, and consider the related ethical implications.

Instructions

In a 2–3 page paper, illustrate how ethical considerations and leadership principles affect administrative initiatives. Choose one higher education administrative leadership role and create an ethical dilemma that would fall under that administrator’s purview. Present a solution to the dilemma and justify the recommended actions. Base your solution on the readings as well as outside resources. Consider some of the following questions to help you think about an issue:

What factors should leaders consider?
Why should some issues be considered more thoroughly than others for decision making?
How do leaders balance personal preferences with organizational needs when they may be opposed to each other?
What values should not be violated?

For this section of the paper, propose a viable approach for addressing the ethical dilemma you presented in the previous section and explain what leadership principles should be applied to this situation. Consider the questions listed above to help guide you with this portion of the paper. Remember to provide adequate support using the course readings, as well as outside scholarly resources.
