CRIM 1101 (R10)

The impact of mass media on crime and justice is substantial because it is directly or
indirectly a strong way of communication and criminologists approached the media as a
powerful social force. Media in the form of newspapers, television, magazines, internet
influences people’s perception of victims, criminals and law enforcement officials, it
spreads a news regarding people who are involved in crime among people in society.
This indicates that most of public knowledge about crime and justice is directly an
outcome of media. media influences perception of people about police effectiveness
and media regarding crime leaves positive and negative impressions on people’s mind.
The present paper discusses the impact that the media has on the criminal justice
system (CJS). The paper touches on social media’s impact on the police, on public
perceptions of the CJS, on the benefits and challenges created by social media, and on
the use of social media as a surveillance tool.
Social media has immense effect on how people think about criminal justice
system. Majority of citizen living in countries have no idea or no contact with crime and
the criminal justice system. “most individuals do not have direct experience to crime
and justice related issues, they often depend on the media as a key source to
obtain information about crime, policy and the justice system”. In real world, it is
true that most of us do not have any contact with crime but still start making assumption
about how police will handle different crime situations on the basis of what media
reflects on social media. For example, there was incidence of Robert Dziekanski’s on
the yvr airport where he attacked by the police due to his behavior and the death video
that was broadcasted around the world becomes a source of shame and disgrace for
Canada and its national force. After watching video, based on one piece of evidence
3
people make assumptions that the stranger is killed by the police because of crime of
being disoriented. Similarly, short video clips on internet with single part of evidence and
photo in newspaper reflects violence or news in television with short video of violence
influence mind of people immediately in a negative way for criminal justice system. For
police, social media has given access to public. By using social media including
Facebook and Twitter police and the public can communicate in real time about
incidents and events. Sometimes the short videos of incidence of crime assisted in
apprehending an offender with the help of victims.
Undoubtedly, public perception of crime is based on the social media.
Top rated television programs depict the image of the main themes that are concerned
with various dimensions of crime and portrays criminal justice in a way that leaves a
deep impression on public eventually, it influences how public assume criminal justice
system works. public knowledge of the operation of the criminal justice system is
entirely based on the media and social contact between police and public is only
through media therefore, the image criminal justice system has in people mind is with
the help of the contribution of media. Crime rates are high among young generation as
compare to the age range between 50-65. As the age increasing crime rate according to
age group decreases. Crime rates among young generation is high because they get
involved in criminal activities and the large part of the social media users are young
generation.
Media has benefits and challenges on criminal justice system. The
shocking videos of Muslim counteries where offenders are shooting people in front of
camera and posting it on the social media has a negative impact of these counteries
4
and about their Muslim society on the rest of the world. Therefore, it can be a problem
for the Muslim people to live in other counteries where native people treat them as
criminals. Moreover, social media has been accused of posing danger for many young
people like they get prompting calls for harsher punishment and so on. Social media
also opens a new way for the criminals to track the location of the victims. For example,
Kim Kardashian robbery in Paris when she was living in her private apartment there and
post it on the social media that share her location to her followers as well as to
offenders. It makes their job easy to track her location and commit crime. On the other
hand, people can post photos of criminals or incidences of place to warn people about
the criminal activities and to stay safe from offenders. CCTV provides useful evidence
and how this is affected by circumstances, analysing 251,195 crimes recorded by
British Transport Police that occurred on the British railway network between
2011 and 2015 (Ashby, 2017). Surveillance tool like cctv camera plays a vital role to
catch criminal activities. It is helpful tool to aware police in advance how offenders can
commit crime that helps criminal justice system a lot to get rid of major incidences of
crime by applying the crime prevention methods (Intravia, wolff &Piquero, 2017).
To sum up, the impact of social media is both positive and negative, but it
depends on the public which way they want to use it. The social media contributes to
reduce crimes in society by helping criminal justice system. It is also used by the
offenders in antisocial activities. But still, it is contributing more in reducing crime, so it is
positive tool for the whole world to get rid of offenders and use safety to avoid future
offences.
