1. Consider the image of the thin plate below that can be assumed to be in a state of plane stress.
The height of the plate (L) is 2 meters, the width (w) is 1 meter and the thickness (t) is 10
centimeters. The bottom of the plate is rigidly fixed to the floor and a ramp load is applied to the
left side of the plate while a point load is applied to the right. The maximum loading of the ramp
is 2000 N/m at the top of the plate and the point load is 500 N. Model this plate (a) using two frame
elements and (b) using two linear quadrilateral elements. For each model, solve for the
displacements of the nodes and the stresses in each element if the elastic modulus of the material
is E = 190 GPa, and the Poisson’s ratio is v = 0.3.
2. Consider the 4-node quadrilateral element shown below with ramp load with a maximum of 100
N/cm applied along the top edge. If the element’s Young’s Modulus is E = 190 GPa, its Poisson’s
ratio is v = 0.3, the thickness of the element, t = 1 cm, its height, H = 1.5 m, and its width W = 1
m, determine the displacements, stresses, and strains at each node. Assume plane-stress conditions
and consider nodes 1 and 2 to be fixed.
Note: To determine the stresses and strains at each node, you will need to evaluate the [D] matrix
(discussed in the previous lecture) at the coordinates of each node separately.
