MOTHER BURNS BACON.
A little bit background about the poem. This poem has depicted a tragedy
happened to a black boy named Emmett Till. Till and his friends went to a grocery store and
they bet who dare to talk to a white man called Carolyn. Till was the only one to talk with
Carolyn. However, Carolyn told others that Till grabbed her hand and asked her for a date.
Then, everyone knew the news. When Carolyn’s husband came back, he heard the news. Her
husband and several of his friends went to pull Till out of his bed and drove to a place where
they beat Till and shot him. Till has dead but Carolyn’s husband has not been arrested.
After what Carolyn’s husband has done, Carolyn felt different about her husband.
From my understanding, she wanted her husband “He should have been older, perhaps”
(Brooks, 1960). I think she wants her husband to be older so he would probably not do what
was done to Till. Why do you think Carolyn think her husband differently after her husband
has killed Till while she told others that Till grabbed her hand and asked her for a date? Can
you use a few words to describe Carolyn?
In addition, I also found something interesting about the format of the poem. For
example, one sentence is split into two lines in order to emphasize the point the author wants
to make. In addition, if you have noticed that the word “he” is capitalized in this poem as “HE”.
I think the author wrote HE to represent Carolyn’s husband to show that he is severe as the
work HE. Do you think “a sentence splits into two lines” has helped with you understanding
the poem?

In Search of Our Mothers’ garden
This article contains both articles and poems. This article describes that Jean Toomer
walked through the south in the early the twenties and found something interesting, “Black
women whose spirituality was so intense, so deep, so unconscious, that they were themselves
unaware of the richness they held” (Alice, 1972). Many black women were not aware of their
power of being creative and knowledgeable. What do you think that makes black women
unaware of their ability? Does that only because of the hardship of life? In addition, as the
author said that “they became more than “sexual objects” (Alice, 1972). We can see how black
women staus were low back to those days. “Marriage, If not running away, was expected of
seventeen-year-old girls” (Alice, 1972). The author also mentioned that her mother has
already had two children and was pregnant for the third one when she was 20. This provides
evidence of black women being viewed as “sexual objects”.
As Alice said in her article, “They waited for a day when the unknown thing that was
in them would be made known” (Alice, 1972). This sentence depicts that on the one hand,
black women struggled during that time. On the other hand, it also shows that black women
were still having hope, believing their beauty and power would be noticed. It is interesting to
see how black women could have a deep spirituality despite abuse and struggling time. Why
do you think is the reason for black women to have hope while they were having a tough
time? Do you think they were holding faith that their beauty will be found in the future when
they were struggling?

The last quatrain of the Ballad of Emmett Till
This is a short poem but contains much deeper information than it states. This poem
is made up of 10 lines. However, each line is not a totally complete sentence, meaning it
leaves readers to think. How do you feel this style of the poem? In addition, I think this broken
line also represents the broken and dead body of Emmett Till. This poem uses simple, mostcommon used words to express the murder. The murder of Emmett Till is common in the
south back to that time. Just as what happened in “A Bronzeville mother loiters in Mississippi.
meanwhile, a Mississippi mother burns bacon”, if a black man stared at a white female, they
need to be punished.
By reading the poem carefully, it uses color words to both describe what has
happened but also express feelings. For example, “She sits in a red room”(Brooks), I think the
“red” represents Emmett’s blood. “Drinking black coffee”(Brooks), I think “black” represents
two things here. One is the skin of them. Another is the black truth of what happened. “Chaos
in windy grays(Brooks)”, things are not either black or white back that time, meaning only one
rule. However, it was not fair enough in the past. Gray means different rules apply to different
people. How do you think about the colors used in this poem? Does it help with what the
poem really wants to express? Can you feel other implicit meaning of these colors?
