Assignment:
1. You may choose any critic or reviewer found in a publication targeted to an arts
readership. It may be in print media, issued weekly, bimonthly, monthly, seasonally or
online, in a blog. The reviewer or critic you choose is one you believe is good,
illuminates aesthetics for you, and whom you will want to read on an ongoing basis.
2. Read two reviews by this author, written within a year. Choose one review you
want to critique.
3. Reviewing the Reviewer is three pages of writing, due top of the class Tuesday,
May 28, handed in after the discussion.
Reviewing the Reviewers Format
1. Page One. Left Hand Corner, Top, Name of Reviewer and Exhibit, Exhibit Title and
Venue, Venue Address, and Dates. (Note: the show does not need to be current.)
2. Your Title. Middle of Page. Byline under:
1 First paragraph (Five sentences.) Include the key journalistic information and
why you chose this particular reviewer.
a. Second paragraph to paragraph five. Discuss and lift up all the sections,
words, notes or phrases which “helped you see” this work of art or art in general.
In other words, what did this reviewer ILLUMINATE to you? What did this
illumination make you think about, see, or perceive?
b. Fifth paragraph to paragraph ten and continuing. Choose what was negative
in the reviewer’s writing; the phrases, words, and notes which were a block to
your understanding and did not help” you to see. Included in this may be the
tone or unconscious feeling you receive. Fundamentally you are analyzing
what was not helpful.
c. Final paragraphs. This is your conclusion, your summarizing thoughts. The
following questions are offered as a guide to the shaping of your summary, and
may be pertinent to you. Despite your criticisms, will you read this reviewer
again? Why? If not, why not? Do you recommend this reviewer to a peer? Why or
why not? Did a phrase or note stay with you so that you want to keep being
influenced positively by it? Did you make an important find—about yourself, art
or this genre etc– in this critical process? Your responses here will be the core of
your round table discussion with your peers on Tuesday, May 28.
3. Addenda. Please attach one copy of a page with the reviewer byline.
