The articles about the plagiarism detection software Turnitin present an irony: While testing for student dishonesty, Turnitin operates on shaky ethical grounds by retaining for use original work. The use of Turnitin also raises questions regarding student privacy.
Write a post considering these issues of original expression and privacy. In your answer consider if Turnitin violates FERPA, the law protecting student privacy. Discuss if Turnitin and similar applications comply with Fair Use standards, especially in view of transformed use. On the other hand, could you make the argument that such applications defend free speech by enforcing an academically honest environment? Reflect on one of more of these points both from an ethical and legal perspective.
