Reflective Writing Assignment on Global, Societal, and Contemporary Issues
Due: Thursday 2 May 2019, 5:00 p.m.

The work of today’s engineers is no longer confined in a cubicle or an office in an engineering
firm. Globalization has made engineering become an international professional. The everchanging world has also changed the ways and contexts in which engineering knowledge can be
applied. Engineering technology and engineering graduates are required to have not only
technical knowledge and capabilities but also an understanding of the societal and global impacts
of engineering work as well as knowledge of the contemporary issues related to engineering
practices.
Each student needs to do his/her own research on global and societal contexts and contemporary
issues in engineering and technology and write an individual reflection paper about it. Below are
some resources that can help you start with your writing. The reflection paper should be a typed,
single space document, and should consist of 300 to 600 words. Print the word count at the
end of your paper.
A few key things to keep in mind when writing your paper:
• Societal and Global Impacts: Identify and briefly discuss several engineering and
engineering technology innovations and solutions whose impacts have affected
economy, society, and culture in the US and other nations.
• Globalization and engineering practice: Discuss how the engineering and engineering
technology profession may change over the next 25 years due to the globalization and
identify at least three ways how the profession may change.
• Contemporary Technical Issues. Identify and discuss several technological issues why
they are important (e.g., artificial intelligence (AI), self-driving cars, meta data, 3D
printing, genetically modified organisms (GMO), vaccinations, transition from a tobacco
economy, alternative energy) and how they can affect the engineering and engineering
technology profession.
• Provide at least three references. Your references must be from reliable sources in
printed (e.g. books, professional journals, etc.) and online formats. Cite your references
at the end of your paper (not included in the word count).
