Effects of Spending Too Much Time Online Persuasive Inquiry The persuasive inquiry is about the negative effects of spending too much time online. The first part is already completed, which is showing the articles/findings of the inquiry utilizing logos and ethos only. This is to give the findings credibility without being personal. ** The second part that you’ll have to work on is persuading the audience by using pathos to thoughtfully appeal to their emotions while using the information from Part 1. Be careful of being too strong! When trying to connect to your designated audience, being too strong can be just as ineffective as being too weak. Finally, write a conclusion to the essay. Part 2 and a conclusion in two double spaced pages. The Negative effects of spending excessive time online
Social and digital media have been essential parts of our lives, and they continue
to offer something new that is making life easier. However, it is proper to say that the
use of too much social and digital media has various negative effects on our lives. This
research focuses mainly on the negative outcomes of spending excessive time online
on children and adolescents because it’s important to raise people’s awareness about it
and provide suggestions that contribute in preventing the issue from happening.
Spending excessive time online leads to several negative outcomes such as health,
social, behavioral and psychological issues.
Spending too much time online the article “Social Media and New Technology: A
Primer,” adolescents medicine experts discuss the current positive and negative effects
of new media on preteens and teens. Research findings confirm that social media use
has serious effects on young users, they spend most of their time on social media
instead of doing other beneficial activities. People now spend too much time on their
smartphones during the day which causes displacement, and it is the time away from
doing activities, sports and interactions with family and friends that are beneficial in our
real life (Hogan and Strasburger 1206). “The average person in the UK spends more
than a day a week online” (Hymas). Consequently, that could also cause risky health
problems such as obesity. Teens who spend more time on TV are more likely to neglect
activities, therefore, eating and lack of movement make them obese as a result.
The excessive use of internet and social media is also related to poor sleep
habits. A broad analysis of 20 studies has shown that sleep disorder is related to the
use of media devices in which they interrupt sleep time and present “psychologically
stimulating content” (Hogan and Strasburger 1206-1207). As a result, many people
have less time to sleep. The authors also state that alcohol companies generated
content on social media encourages alcohol use which influences teens to have
drinking behavior by learning through observation (1207). The experts finally provided
helpful suggestions to parents and users such as limiting the time spent with media,
encouraging other activities, advising kids about the use and risks of media and being
familiar with their media habits.
The article “A conceptual and methodological critique of internet addiction
research: Towards a model of compensatory internet use” argues that different
situations in life cause the motivations to internet use which result in having addiction,
and It encourages researches to not just link the use of internet directly with the
negative effects, but to investigate the background of the user to identify the situation.
Internet addiction is using the internet excessively without control. For example, some
people play online games to escape stress which could bring negative outcomes. Some
of the negative outcomes caused by addiction are skipping meals and losing sleep
(Kardefelt-Winther 351).
Some negative effects the author mentioned in the article “A decade of
smartphones: We now spend an entire day every week online” were stress and
disruption. Ian MacRae said that “Some find themselves feeling overloaded when
online, or frustrated when they are not” (qtd. in Hymas). Consequently, excessive time
online causes stress from the fear of missing out that eventually becomes a habit to an
individual. Similarly, that habit develops to create a form of frustration when being
unable to connect to the digital world.
The article “Are your kids addicted to video games? Here’s what to look for”
discusses compulsive video gaming and its risks. The World Health Organization
classified “Gaming disorder” as a mental health problem which is common in children
(Bowen). Dr. Leonard Jason, a psychology professor at DePaul University who has
studied adolescent addiction and gaming says that children now play violent games
involving killings and negative actions against women that are associated with
aggressive behavioral tendencies. Some keep playing video games after school for long
hours not doing beneficial activities. Kids are easily influenced by surroundings, and at
this age they should learn to do other beneficial things that contribute in building their
foundation and character correctly.
It’s obvious that social media use is associated with negative effects on the
users. However, the article “Are heavy users of computer games and social media more
computer literate?” presents a different view. Markus Appel says that people who spend
a significant amount of time playing video games or on social media have higher
computer literacy levels than people who do not. Frequency of internet and social media
use contributes in gaining practical computer skills and knowledge. Using a computer
could make the user familiar with some aspects that improve practical and theoretical
literacy. A gained practical knowledge is fixing the internet by switching the WIFI module
on and off, and a theoretical literacy is knowing the term IP address. In addition, the
author says that high literacy is related to the amount of internet and computer use
(Appel 1340). That’s not right! Despite the health, psychological, behavioral and social
negative effects associated with the amount of time spent, knowing how to switch the
internet module on and off is not really a skill, and can be acquired even through using
for a short time. Using the computer heavily leads to displacement which is the main
factor leading to most negative outcomes. So, there is now way that the amount of time
spent is related to high literacy, in fact it will backfire.
