“Bark beetles pose a threat to the forest ecosystem because they feed on a part of the inner bark of a
tree called the phloem layer [1]. This phloem layer is responsible for transporting nutrients throughout
the tree. The damage done to the phloem layer compromises the flow of nutrients and water, leading to
the death of the tree. Bark beetles communicate with one another to indicate when a tree is healthy
and inhabitable using a combination of sounds and pheromones. These sounds and pheromones are
designed to propagate through the phloem layer. These signals indicate favorable conditions for
reproduction. When a bark beetle enters the phloem layer, it feeds on the tree. It also introduces a blue
stain fungus that clogs the phloem layer, preventing nutrient flow. If the beetles’ population continues
to increase, it could destroy acres of residential and commercial property and natural habitats for other
wildlife species. Adding chemicals to counter the pheromones of the bark beetle is detrimental to tree
health. An alternative solution is to use the bark beetles’ own sounds to prevent them from occupying
the tree.”
“The goal is to make the device battery operated so that it can operate independently of grid power.
There are two types of batteries that can be used to power the device: Primary (non-rechargeable,
disposable) and secondary (rechargeable) batteries. Despite the convenience of secondary batteries,
there is a smaller ratio of density to specific energy output available compared to primary batteries. This
means that secondary batteries will have a lower total charge capacity when compared to primary
batteries. Figure 1 shows the difference in storage capability between the primary and the secondary
batteries.”
“Audio information, by definition, is known as “unstructured data,” but it must be replicated precisely
and consistently for the bark beetle deterrent technology to function. Data is unstructured if cannot be
formatted in matrix form [3]. Unstructured data is difficult to query and retrieve by applications. The
audio information will not be properly redistributed by the exciter because it will not have enough
information to recreate the sound waves [4]. Distortion can also occur when the information is not
transferred quickly enough if the file is too large. A large sample rate retains the most information, but
the overabundance of information will use more energy than necessary and make the device less
efficient.”
