Jeff Sustainability Manifesto
When I think of a sustainable environment or plan, I think of one that has the capacity to be lasting. Few
things are self-sustaining because most aspects of life are dependent upon other factors, organisms,
people, etc. to thrive and grow. Sustainability is often focused on ecological initiatives in my mind,
however, we can assess many things by how sustainable they are. The importance of sustainability
stretches across my personal and professional life and how I interact with my surrounding community and
resources. Below is my plan for engaging in more sustainable living.
1. I will continue recycling in my home and elsewhere when possible.
My family recycles paper, plastics and metals in our home but I will be more cognizant of
doing so in our community as well.
2. I will continue educating my children on the importance of sustainability and put it into
practice in our home.
We have engaged in a home energy saving plan but it is focused primarily on electricity and
water. I will educate my children on other ways in which we can engage in sustainable
activities in our home.
3. I will engage in activities that educate and establish sustainability efforts in my childrens
school.
My childrens school engages in an extensive sustainability plan. Some of these activities
include Earth Day celebrations, Walk to School Day, cafeteria and classroom recycling, etc. I
will engage in the educational activities and assist the school in creating more sustainability
efforts.
4. I will engage in efforts to reduce my footprint and those of my family on the earth.
My husband and I educate our children on the importance of leaving as small of a footprint
on our earth as possible. I can do more, however, at raising their awareness on a regular basis
of how their interactions w/ our earth impact it and identify some new behaviors that we can
engage in that would further reduce our footprints.
5. I will shop the local farmers market a minimum of one time per month.
Supporting local farmers and businesses and healthy cooking/eating have always been
important to me. I will make a commitment to consuming more locally grown produce and
goods.
6. I will continue our energy saving plan in our home.
We have succeeded in reducing energy and water use in our home through education and
installing energy saving devices and strategies. We will expand these efforts.
7. I will commit to using more environmentally friendly cleaners in my home.
I will educate myself on more environmentally friendly cleaning options and embark on a
plan to change the products used and to eliminate waste.
8. I will continue making use of the energy saving features on my home appliances.
We have energy saving options on our washer, dryer, dishwasher, and water heater. I will
educate my children on these options so they use them when doing laundry and starting the
dishwasher as well.
9. I will continue sending our yard clippings and debris to our community recycling and
compost center.
We have not been consistent about this but Ill work with my husband on making a
commitment to getting this waste to our compost center instead of sending it out with
garbage.
10. I will reduce the frequency of use of our home irrigation system.
This is an area that we have neglected to use sustainability efforts. The sprinkler system is
programmed to come on automatically overnight so its been overlooked. I will change the
settings to its used less frequently with the goal of saving more water.
