The documents contained in Freedom Summer reveal many differ.
The documents contained in Freedom Summer reveal many different aspects of the Civil Rights Movement (CRM) of the 1960s from local organizing techniques to the challenges of seeking federal protection. The organizing efforts of the COFO and other grassroots programs tackled many obstacles and even faced death in order to ensure the political, social, and economic equality of black Americans, in the South and throughout the entire United States. Using the documents from Freedom Summer, your assignment is to write one 4-5 page, doublespaced, 12pt, Times New Roman font paper that answers one of the following questions. It is essential that you employ direct citations and references from the text and that your paper includes a well-written thesis (AKA argument). Do not include a cover page or bibliography, but do include your name and page numbers. Save the trees and print double-sided. Footnotes or internal citation both allowed. **It is essential that in these papers we see your arguments based off the primary documents and not your opinions based off your lived experience. Although these issues resonate with many of the contemporary debates in the U.S., you need to show that you understand the specific issues and historical context of 1964. When possible, you need to use details (including names, dates, organizations, and laws) in order to make your argument. As always, you should write this paper assuming that the reader knows nothing about the CRM, meaning that you have to carefully explain all of your points.** 1. Evaluate the Freedom Summer project, taking into account the black and white Americans who helped organize it, its purpose, how it was implemented, and the many potential barriers to its success. What were the goals of the Freedom Summer project and did it accomplish them in 1964? Was it successful, and why? Consider too if there were any unintended legacies of the program. 2. One of the pillars of the Freedom Summer was interracial cooperation. Explain why and how organizers decided to include white Americans in their push for civil rights. What were the potential barriers to interracial cooperation and how did it shape the implementation of Freedom Summer? What were the limitations of interracial cooperation? Be sure to take into account not only actions in Mississippi, but also the difficulties of working with the all-white Democratic party. When answering these questions, take into account all the different historical actors that appear in the documents. In other words, do not spend the whole paper talking only about one group. Try and show the complexity of this entire endeavour
