Hearing Loss Impression Assignment (50 points)
Due:
• Paper will need to be turned in prior to beginning Module 7.
• Completed assignment is needed for discussion board topic.
Instructions
Hearing protection (earplugs) will be provided to each student. While wearing earplugs to
simulate hearing loss, each student will need to participate in an activity that relies on auditory
information. Examples of situations: dining in a restaurant with a group of friends, watching a
movie, etc. Each student should write a 2-3 page paper about the experience.
The following information is a guide for you to follow. Each question does not specifically need
to be answered. Use this as a guide based on your experience. You need to write a paper
about your experience; a list of questions and answers is not acceptable. Please check your
spelling, grammar etc. Points will be taken off for poorly written work.
1. Setting: Information about the activity. Where, number of people etc.
2. Time: How long you kept the ear plugs in. Ear plugs need to remain in the ears for at
least 30 minutes.
3. How did having ear plugs in change your hearing?
4. In what way was your communication effected? Describe any difficulties you had
communicating with people around you.
5. What were the reactions of people around you?
6. In what ways did you compensate for your change in hearing?
7. In what ways did people around you change their interactions with you?
8. Were you eager to remove the ear plugs?

Students with severe to profound hearing loss:
You are not required to wear ear plugs to change your hearing for this assignment. If you wear
hearing aids, you may write about what communication is like without this aid. Write a paper
about your experience with communication in a similar situation as listed above.
