Instructions for Re-writing Essay #1
Domingo F. Sarmiento, Facundo: or Civilization and Barbarism (1845).
You will now be revising the paper you wrote on Sarmiento’s,Facundo. Re-writing is an
integral part of the writing process; everyone, no matter how advanced or practiced a writer,
benefits from revising. Professional writers, academic and otherwise, go through many revisions
before the final version is published (or even submitted for publication).
In your first essay you were asked to identify Sarmiento’s ideas about a particular theme or issue.
The objective of that essay was to make sure you understood exactly what Sarmiento was saying.
In this essay you are to go beyond his words by analyzing the meaning and implications of his
argument. You should assess the ideological conflicts at stake in the text, the content of his
solutions, and the larger meaning of his position for Argentine society. The challenge of this
essay is to think beyond the text itself by asking your own original questions based on your first
essay.
Whereas many of your first essays dealt with similar themes, this rewrite offers each of you the
opportunity to explain Sarmiento in your own words, using your own ideas, and most
importantly, making your own argument about the text. This last point is crucial. You have
demonstrated in your first essay that you know what Sarmiento said about a particular topic.
Now your assignment is to explain his inconsistencies, his biases, and his place in the political
debate involving Argentine society according to his book.
You may use some of the same sentences and perhaps even a paragraph or two from your first
essay to write this one, though you will probably want to revise them somewhat to better fit your
argument. You should not simply add several new sentences to your previous essay; the idea is
to use the first essay as a guide. Read the instructor’s comments carefully and make sure to
incorporate those into your rewrite. When you turn in your revised paper, you must also
attach and turn in your first essay.
As before, your essay should have the following elements (separated by transitions and not
subheadings):
1) An introductory paragraph in which you identify the central argument of your essay
and how it relates to Sarmiento’s text.
2) Your argument/thesis should be in this paragraph (identify your thesis statement by
making the font text bold).
3) The main body of your essay (several paragraphs) in which you analyze Sarmiento’s
text to support your argument.
4) A concluding paragraph in which you summarize your essay and suggest further
questions and/or connections to issues beyond Sarmiento’s book.
Your papers are to be five pages, typed and double-spaced. Although you will need to make
specific references to Sarmiento’s text, this essay depends much more on your ability to explain
his ideas in your own words. When you do quote, simply cite the page number after the
quotation; for example (Sarmiento, p. 25).
